Biography

Elizabeth's birth and parentage are unknown or unproven (see Research Notes). She was born, perhaps England, about 1625 (if age 21 at first marriage). Elizabeth died between 22 April 1658 (named the will of her father-in-law Green)[1][2] and 1661 (husband married again).

Elizabeth married (1), perhaps Charlestown, about 1646 (birth of child, 23 April 1647), Robert2 Long Jr. He was baptized St. Albans Abbey, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, 17 January 1618/9,[3] and died before 3 October 1651 (date of inventory).[4] Robert2 Long was the son of Robert Long and Sarah Taylor;[5] he was "aged 16" at the time the family immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony, aboard the Defence in 1635, departing Dunstable, Bedfordshire, England.[6][7]

Elizabeth (____) Long married (2), probably Charlestown, by 1654 (birth of child, 11 October 1654), Jacob2 Green. He was born, probably England, about 1623 (aged 36 in 1657 and 33 in 1660),[8][9] and he died after 17 June 1681 (granted administration of William Bartholomew's estate).[10]

Jacob Green was the son of John Green and his first wife, probably, Perseverance.[11] Jacob Green immigrated to New England aboard the James in 1632.[12]

Following Elizabeth's death, Jacob married again, by 1661,[13] Mary (Bartholomew) Whipple. She was the widow of Matthew Whipple and daughter of William Bartholomew.[14]

Family

Robert2 and Elizabeth (_____) Long were the parents of one child,

  1. Samuel Long, born in Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 23 April 1647,[15] died there 15 September 1671;[16][17] married in Charlestown, 20 January 1668/9, Elizabeth Pinkham.[18] Samuel's will dated 22 August 1671, reportedly mentions his pregnant wife, son Robert, uncle John and father-in-law [step-father], Jacob Green;[19][20] it was witnessed by John DeWitt, William Bartholomew and Mary Green.[21]

Jacob2 and Elizabeth (_____) (Long) Green were the parents of two children,

  1. Jacob Green Jr., born in Charlestown, 11 October, 1654,[22]
  2. John Green, born before 22 April 1658 (named in paternal grandfather's will),[23]

G2G - Seek assistance reading Robert Long Jr. 1651 inventory.
Samuel Long 1671 Will
G2G - Should the wife of Robert^2 Long (PGM) and Jacob Green (PGM) be Elizabeth (____) (Long) Green.

Maiden name (LNAB) - Not Hawkins. Early authors mis-attributed a Long death at Barbados to Robert^2 Long, thus his wife was called Elizabeth Hawkins. That woman is more properly Elizabeth (Hawkins) (Long) (Winthrop) Richards -- she has no affiliation with either Robert^2 Long or Jacob^2 Green.

Maiden name (LNAB) - Hopkins not shown. New England Marriages prior to 1700 refers to our woman as (a) "Elizabeth (Hopkins)/[Hawkins]?" in the entry for her marriage to Robert^2 Long (by subscription, AmericanAncestors). She is "Elizabeth (Hopkins) [Long]" in the entry for her marriage to Jacob Green (by subscription, AmericanAncestors). Robert^2 Long did have a niece, Ruth Long, who married Joseph Hopkins, but sources for other Hopkins family associations have not been shown. This includes that none of the works consulted in either New England Marriages entry calls her Hopkins.

Identity as widow of Robert Long and wife of Jacob Green. That (a) Robert^2 Long's wife, who Anderson (2005) called "_____ _____"[24] was also (b) the first wife of Jacob^2 Green, who Anderson (1995) called "Elizabeth _____,"[25] comes from a particular interpretation of the 1671 will of her son, Samuel Long. The will referred his "father-in-law" Jacob Green; the witnesses included Mary Greene and William Bartholomew, presumably Jacob's second wife and her father.

If Samuel's relationship to Jacob is interpreted "step-father," then Jacob's relationship to Samuel's mother would be explained. The text of Samuel's will is mostly illegible], but see Wyman's abstract (InternetArchive).

The "step-father" relationship is accepted on WikiTree, but may well be challenged if additional historical records are identified.
