Two different men named John Coffman married two different women named Elizabeth in Tennessee in the early 1800s. In part due to a scarcity of records, this has led many researchers to assume that these four people are just two. Many trees contain a mix of the two families, further confusing future researchers.
The issue is further complicated by rapidly changing county (and even state) boundaries at the time - and the pre-1850 death of one of the John Coffman's.
The two families have many hundreds of living descendants who may be confused about their actual ancestral lines. This research project is intended to provide the best conclusions available based on somewhat limited information. We invite researchers to present additional evidence and contrasting theories.
