Task List

Origin of van der Leest

One possible origin of the family name "van der Leest" is from the shoemaker or cobbler's trade, where a shoe last was commonly used. "van der" means "of the" or "from the" in Dutch, and then "leest" can be translated as "last". This is based on a family story passed down from Henry VanderLeest to Steve VanderLeest.

Another possible origin of the family name is based on a region called "leest". An area that was originally farmland near Veghel, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands was called "leest" and there are still residents in that neighborhood with the family name "van der leest". This is based on email correspondence from Kevin Van Der Leest, learned during his visit to Veghel and discussion with members of the local catholic church.

Hi! I added text to the companion category for your name study (Category:Vander Leest Name Study). Feel free to edit it. The default for the template is to add the main category, but you can add a line to have a different category. See the ONS template page for details. Give me a holler if you have any questions about categorization.

I also created a redirect, so Project:Vander Leest (the link for the button from the VanderLeest surname page) brings you to this page.

Cheers, Liz
