The tornado outbreak of May 1927

Between May 7, 1927 and May 9, 1927, a series of strong tornadoes broke out across the Midwest and the South. At least two hundred and seventeen people were killed in the tornados. F4 damage occurred in rural Arkansas, before devastating the larger town of Poplar Bluff.

It only took three minutes for the tornado to pass through the town, killing 83 people, twenty-one of which were at the Melbourne Hotel. Thirty-one square blocks were completely obliterated. The tornado made its way from the North side of Imboden, Arkanas to North West Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

The goal of this project is to have a space to organize and remember the victims of the tornado that hit Poplar Bluff, Missouri in May of 1927.

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Jourdi Cleghorn.

Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • Research victims of the tornado
  • Organize their names on the page
  • Collect accurate sources for the victims

Will you join me? Please post a comment here on this page, in G2G using the project tag, or send me a private message. Thanks!

Hi! Great work. FYI paragraph 2 says 1929 twice, instead of 1927.
