Wikitree's coverage of Victoria, Australia
- Data Doctor Unsourced Reports as at 18 August 2023 indicate 447,113 profiles may be considered 'Victorian'
- Victoria's population today is around 6.6 million
- In 1851, there were about 77,000 settlers
- It's hard to say how many Aboriginal people lived in Victoria in 1851, but Melbourne's Old Treasury Building claims about 2,000, which seems likely to me to be an underestimate.
Analysis using Wikitree+ suggests that around 14% of 19th Century Victorian births, deaths and marriages are on Wikitree. (Noting, Aboriginal people are largely absent from official records in this period, reflecting the racial perspectives of Australian colonists).

Great question.
A search for 1838 at BDM Victoria (https://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/research-and-family-history/search-your-family-history) returns results, but I don't think it's as simple as to say Victorian records started in 1838.
