Village of Merrickville

When researching your family's connection to the village of Merrickville, it is important to understand that the village has changed significantly over the years since it was established.

Establishment

The northern, or Montague Township part of the village of Merrickville was Lanark County's earliest village settlement and dates to the 1790's, when it was first settled by the Stevens and Merrick families.

Changing Boundaries

The section of the village that was within Lanark County's boundaries when it was established in 1824 was located on the north side of the Rideau River. That part of the village remained within Lanark County until 1860, when the village incorporated as a municipal government and became part of Grenville County again.
