Introduction

What is a Visitation?

Heraldic visitations (see Wikipedia) were undertaken in England between 1530 and 1688 to regulate and register coats of arms, as there was widespread misuse of coats of arms. As part of the inspection process, the heralds recorded the pedigrees of individuals entitled to use coats of arms (known as armigers), and sometimes note the ages of people in the pedigrees. In England, only the armiger is entitled to the arms and passed the entitlement to their heir; coats of arms do not apply to a whole family or surname. An armiger might include the arms of his wife or mother in his own arms (by 'quartering') if she was an heiress. A younger son might be awarded arms similar to, but not identical to, his father's.

Information for the pedigrees was usually given by the current armiger. The information in the pedigrees is therefore reliable for the people living at the time the pedigree was given, and for the parents and grandparents of the informant. The earlier generations can be less reliable, depending on the sources used by the informant.

Visitations in Derbyshire

There have been four visitations taken in Derbyshire: 1569, 1611, 1634 and 1662-1663.

Three of these have been published, two of them in one volume:

  • Derbyshire visitation pedigrees, 1569 and 1611 (London: 1895), available at HathiTrust
    • This privately printed volume combines together pedigrees from two different Visitations, in a form that does not always make it easy to distinguish which information comes from which visitation
  • The Visitation of Derbyshire, taken in 1662, and reviewed in 1663, by William Dugdale, Esq., Norroy King at Arms (London: 1879), available at archive.org
    • Compared with many published visitations, this edition has little or no information added by 19th century editors. Most pedigrees extend back only two or three generations from the informant and are therefore more likely to be correct. There are few spouses or siblings named.
