United States Research
The first recorded instance in the United States was in 1800 on the US Census, for a John Volcik in Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina, United States, where the trail ends for several years.
By 1880 in Texas - with a total of 6 occurrences - the next Volcik names appear; all of which are members of the same family.
The eldest Volcik from the 1880 census, Josef (Joseph) Volcik was born in Vsetín, Moravia in 1828, which at that time was under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to a father known only as Jiří (~ George).
Through further research of Josef, it was noted that the spelling used by himself and his peers was that of an Eastern Moravian Dialect (a Czech language style similar to Slovak, Polish and Russian), Volčík.[1] The Czech language was not an officially recognized until 1877 (7 years after Josef's immigration to the United States), and until the late 19th century, it was seldom used as written language, and except for records of the early 20th century, records were mostly written in Latin and German, or sometimes in Old Church Slavonic, Polish, Hebrew and Yiddish - so it is interesting to note that Czech alphabet was being in used in Texas during that time period (early 20th century).
