The voyage of the Charles Kerr to South Australia in 1840

The barque Charles Kerr sailed from England to the South Australia Colony in 1840. It left Gravesend on 5 March and arrived at Port Adelaide on 16 June 1840. at [1]

The Charles Kerr a 463 ton barque under Captain Harford Arnold and Arthur Skelton, Esq., surgeon-superintendent, carried 216 Commissioner's Emigrants (assisted passengers) to the fledgling colony.


We see this reproduced Advertising from the British Press in the South Australian Record of 15 January 1840:

Under engagement to the Colonization Commissioners,
DIRECT FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA,
THE Ship CHARLES KERR,
burthen per register, 463 tons. HARFORD ARNOLD. Commander.
Lying in the St Katharine's Dock. This
vessel has excellent accommodation for
cabin passengers, and will carry an experienced
surgeon. For freight or passage apply to the Commander at
Lloyd's, and at the Jerusalem Coffee House; or to
JOHN PIRIE and Co., 3 Freeman's Court, Cornhill


from the Adelaide Chronicle and South Australian Literary Record of 24 June 1840 we see:

SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE.

ARRIVED.

Wednesday, June 17.—The barque Charles Kerr, 453 tons, Harford Arnold, Commander from London and Gravesend, having left the latter place on the 6th March. Passengers:— Mrs Longley, Mr Richard Longley, Mr A. M. Laine, Mr. H. Snelling, Mr Alexander Grant, two Masters Longley, and fifty-seven male and fifty-five female adult emigrants ninety-two children.


And also from the Adelaide Chronicle and South Australian Literary Record of June 24, 1840 we see:

There were ten deaths on board the Charles Kerr during the passage, and three births. The deaths were all among the children, except two, one a young man of nineteen, a seaman; and the other a young woman of eighteen.
