From the Ship News., from The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser of 20 January, 1838 we see:
The barque Layton, Captain John Austin, arrived yesterday evening from Bristol, England, having sailed the 8th Sept. ...
The barque Jessie, Captain Bell, arrived at the same time as the Layton, having sailed from Liverpool, England, the 7th September, with a cargo of merchandize. No vessels belonging to this port were spoken by the Jessie ; she experienced fine weather nearly the whole passage. The following are the names of the passengers :-Cabin Mrs. Barker, Miss Clark, Miss M. Clark, Mr. R. Campbell, Mr. R. Rutledge, Mr. B. Cohen, Mr. F. M'Donnell and Miss M'Roberts ; Mr. W. Atkins, Mr A. Little, Mr. C. Woolford, Mrs. Woolford and 2 children, Mrs. Scott, Mr. West, Mr. Harris, and Mr. John Smith. Steerage - James Dolan and wife, Patrick Riley, William Stafford, Patrick Banaan. David Smith, Thomas M'Namara and wife, James Cullen, John Jack and Edward Thomas. The steerage passengers are all labourers engaged by Mr. Rutledge and brought out here by him. Agents for the Jessie, Messrs. A. B. Smith and Co., Harrington-street The Jessie passed 2 ships on Thursday, supposed to be the Augusta Jessie and Emeretta from this port bound to England.
