Australia entered World War II shortly after the invasion of Poland, declaring war on Germany on 3 September 1939.In addition, Australia came under direct attack for the first time in its post-colonial history. Its casualties from enemy action during the war were 27,073 killed and 23,477 wounded.
Australia fought two wars between 1939 and 1945 one against Germany and Italy as part of the British Commonwealth's war effort and the other against Japan in alliance with the United States and Britain. From 1942 until early 1944, Australian forces played a key role in the Pacific War, making up the majority of Allied strength throughout much of the fighting in the South West Pacific.
Australia entered the war against Germany on 3 September 1939, shortly after Britain declared war when its ultimatum for Germany to withdraw from Poland expired. The government of Australia believed that, as Prime Minister Robert Menzies said, "Britain is at war therefore Australia is at war", and asked London to notify Germany that Australia was an associate of the United Kingdom.Australia's support of war was primarily made on the grounds that its interests were inextricably linked to those of Britain, and that a British defeat would destroy the system of imperial defence which Australia relied upon for security against Japan.
The AIF's major units were raised between 1939 and 1941. The 6th Division was formed during October and November 1939 and embarked for the Middle East in early 1940 to complete its training and receive modern equipment after the British Government assured the Australian Government that Japan did not pose an immediate threat. It was planned that the division would join the British Expeditionary Force in France when its preparations were complete, but this did not eventuate as France was conquered before the division was ready. A further three AIF infantry divisions (the 7th Division, 8th Division and 9th Division) were raised in the first half of 1940 as well as a corps headquarters (I Corps) and numerous support and service units. All of these divisions and the majority of the support units were deployed overseas during 1940 and 1941. An AIF armoured division (the 1st Armoured Division) was also raised in early 1941 but never left Australia.
The bombing of Darwin on 19 February 1942 was both the first and the largest single attack mounted by a foreign power on Australia. On this day, 242 Japanese aircraft attacked ships in Darwin's harbour and the town's two airfields in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using them as bases to contest the invasions of Timor and Java. The town was only lightly defended and the Japanese inflicted heavy losses upon the Allied forces other areas of Darwin also suffered some damage and there were a number of civilian casualties
The Japanese raid wasn't like the attack on Pearl Harbor in that it was against a nation that had already declared war on Japan (on 8 December 1941). It was similar to the attack on Pearl Harbor in that it was a successful aerial surprise attack on a naval target that came as a great shock to Australia Although Darwin was a less significant military target, more bombs were dropped there than on Pearl Harbor. The Australian government downplayed the damage from the bombing raids on Darwin, believing its publication would represent a significant psychological blow to Australians the raids were the first and largest of almost 100 air raids against Australia during 1942–43.
By the end of the war, almost a million Australians had served in the armed forces, whose military units fought primarily in the Europe, North African campaign, and the South Pacific.
The Malayan Campaign was a campaign fought by Allied and Axis forces in Malaya, from 8 December 1941 – 31 January 1942 during the Second World War,the campaign was dominated by land battles between British Commonwealth army units, and the Imperial Japanese Army with minor skirmishes at the beginning of the campaign between Commonwealth and Thai forces. For the British, Indian, Australian and Malayan forces defending the colony, the campaign was a total disaster.
The battle is notable for the Japanese use of bicycle infantry, which allowed troops to carry more equipment and swiftly move through thick jungle terrain. Royal Engineers, equipped with demolition charges, destroyed over a hundred bridges during the retreat, which did little to delay the Japanese by the time the Japanese had captured Singapore, they had suffered 9,600 casualties
The Battle of Singapore, also known as the Fall of Singapore, was fought in the South-East Asian theatre of the Second World War when the Empire of Japan invaded the Allied stronghold of Singapore,Singapore was the major British military base in South-East Asia and nicknamed the "Gibraltar of the East",the fighting in Singapore lasted from 8–15 February 1942.
It resulted in the capture of Singapore by the Japanese and the largest surrender of British-led military personnel in history, about 80,000 British, Indian and Australian troops became prisoners of war, joining 50,000 taken by the Japanese in the earlier Malayan Campaign
In January 1942, prior to the surrender, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) squadrons had been evacuated and Royal Australian Navy (RAN) warships were ordered to leave Singapore, the remaining 65 Australian Army nurses stationed in Singapore were also ordered to evacuate aboard the SS Vyner Brook, a British ship, their colleagues, who had sailed the previous day, all arrived home safely.
The SS Vyner Brook took a direct hit from Japanese bombers and those who survived made their way on-shore to Banka Island in the strait between Sumatra and Banka, civilians, wounded soldiers and nurses to the Japanese and were machine gunned on the beach only one nurse survived, Vivian Bullwinkel
By 943 only 2,500 Australian prisoners remained, the others having been transported in "hell ships" to be used as forced labor on the Thai-Burma Railway and in steel works, copper and coal mines in Taiwan, Burma, Borneo and Japan.Conditions in Changi were indescribable, food was scarce, disease endemic, torture and beheadings prevalent.
Allied Troops liberated Changi on 5th September 1945,this followed the unconditional surrender by the Japanese on 2nd September 1945.
After the fall of Singapore, the Australian government and many Australians feared that Japan would invade the Australian mainland, Australia was ill-prepared to counter such an attack as the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) lacked modern aircraft and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) was too small and unbalanced to counter the Imperial Japanese Navy.
In the First Battle of Kokoda the defenders were poorly trained, outnumbered and under-resourced, the resistance was such that, according to captured documents, the Japanese believed they had defeated a force more than 1,200 strong when, in fact, they were facing only 77 Australian troops.
While the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I was Australia's first military test as a new nation, the fighting during the Kokoda campaign represents the first time in the nation's history that its security was directly threatened. Although it has since become accepted that an invasion of Australia was not possible, or even planned by the Japanese, at the time there was a very real belief within Australia that this was possible and as such the Kokoda campaign has come to be viewed by some as the battle that "saved Australia",as a result, within the collective Australian psyche, the campaign and particularly the role of the 39th Battalion, has become a key part of modern notions of the Anzac legend.
The Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels was the name given by Australian troops to a group of Papua New Guinean people who, during World War II, assisted and escorted injured Australian troops down the Kokoda trail, "Fuzzy-Wuzzy" was originally used by British soldiers in the 19th century as a name for Hadendoa warriors on the Red Sea coast of the Sudan, and referred to their elaborate butter-matted hairstyles, the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels were named for both their frizzy hair and helpful role.4000 Australian lives were lost in the campaign,it is speculated that this number would have been much larger had it not been for the help of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels.
Written by an Australian Digger
“They carried stretchers over seemingly impassable barriers, with the patient reasonably comfortable, the care they give to the patient is magnificent,if night finds the stretcher still on the track, they will find a level spot and build a shelter over the patient, they will make him as comfortable as possible fetch him water and feed him if food is available, regardless of their own needs, they sleep four each side of the stretcher and if the patient moves or requires any attention during the night, this is given instantly, these were the deeds of the ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’ – for us!”
No known injured soldier that was still alive was ever abandoned by the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, even during heavy combat,as of Anzac Day 2007, only three of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels were still alive,in July 2007, grandsons of Australian World War II soldiers and grandsons of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels took part in the "Kokoda Challenge".
Just under 29,000 Australians were taken prisoner during the war,Only 14,000 of the 21,467 Australian prisoners taken by the Japanese survived captivity, the majority of the deaths in captivity were due to malnutrition and disease.
The 8,000 Australians captured by Germany and Italy were generally treated in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, the majority of these men were taken during the fighting in Greece and Crete in 1941, with the next largest group being 1,400 airmen shot down over Europe, like other western Allied POWs, the Australians were held in permanent camps in Italy and Germany,as the war neared its end the Germans moved many prisoners towards the interior of the country to prevent them from being liberated by the advancing Allied armies. These movements were often made through forced marches in harsh weather and resulted in many deaths, four Australians were also executed following a mass escape from Stalag Luft III in March 1944.While the Australian prisoners suffered a higher death rate in German and Italian captivity than their counterparts in World War I, it was much lower than the rate suffered under Japanese internment.
Like the other Allied personnel captured by the Japanese, most of the thousands of Australians captured in the first months of 1942 during the conquest of Malaya and Singapore, the NEI and New Guinea were held in harsh conditions, Australians were held in camps across the Asia-Pacific region and many endured long voyages in grossly overcrowded ships, while most of the Australian POWs who died in Japanese captivity were the victim of deliberate malnutrition and disease, hundreds were deliberately killed by their guards.
The Burma-Thai Railway was the most notorious of the prisoner of war experiences, as 13,000 Australians worked on it at various times during 1942 and 1943 alongside thousands of other Allied POWs and Asians conscripted by the Japanese; nearly 2,650 Australians died there, thousands of Australian POWs were also sent to the Japanese home islands where they worked in factories and mines in generally harsh conditions. The POWs held in camps at Ambon and Borneo suffered the highest death rates 77 percent of those at Ambon died and few of the 2,500 Australian and British prisoners in Borneo survived, almost all were killed by overwork and a series of death marches in 1945.
The treatment of the POWs prompted many Australians to remain hostile towards Japan after the war, Australian authorities investigated the abuses against Allied POWs in their country's zone of responsibility after the war, and guards who were believed to have mistreated prisoners were among those tried by Australian-administered war crimes trials.
When the Second World War broke out, nurses again volunteered, motivated by a sense of duty eventually some 5,000 Australian nurses served in a variety of locations, including the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Britain, Asia, the Pacific, and Australia. Seventy-eight died, some through accident or illness, but most as a result of enemy action or while prisoners of war.
At first, the AANS was the only women’s service The Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service (RAAFNS) was formed in 1940, and the Royal Australian Navy Nursing Service (RANNS) in 1942. But the AANS remained by far the largest, and also made up the bulk of those who served overseas.
By the end of the war, nursing sisters had been commissioned as officers, although many were loath to give up their traditional titles of “sister” and “matron”. They were yet to be given the same status and pay as male officers.
Nancy Grace Augusta Wake AC GM Born in Roseneath, Wellington, New Zealand in 1912 served as a British agent during the later part of World War II. She became a leading figure in the maquis groups of the French Resistance and was one of the Allies' most decorated servicewomen of the war. After the fall of France in 1940, she became a courier for the French Resistance and later joined the escape network of Captain Ian Garrow. By 1943, Wake was the Gestapo's most wanted person, with a 5 million-franc price on her head.
After reaching Britain, Wake joined the Special Operations Executive. On the night of 29–30 April 1944, Wake was parachuted into the Auvergne, becoming a liaison between London and the local maquis group headed by Captain Henri Tardivat in the Forest of Tronçais. From April 1944 until the liberation of France, her 7,000+ maquisards fought 22,000 SS soldiers, causing 1,400 casualties, while taking only 100 themselves.
Wake was appointed a Chevalier (knight) of the Legion of Honour in 1970 and was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1988.
Initially, she refused offers of decorations from Australia, saying: "The last time there was a suggestion of that I told the government they could stick their medals where the monkey stuck his nuts. The thing is if they gave me a medal now, it wouldn't be love so I don't want anything from them.It was not until February 2004, that Wake received the Companion of the Order of Australia.
In April 2006, she was awarded the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association's highest honour, the RSA Badge in Gold.Wake's medals are on display in the Second World War gallery at the Australian War Memorial Museum in Canberra.
On 3 June 2010, a "heritage pylon" paying tribute to Wake was unveiled on Oriental Parade in Wellington, New Zealand, near the place of her birth - Sources
