About the Project

Welcome to the Wadenphul Name Study project!

This page serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Wadenphul name and its many variants.

Feel free to join the study if you have an interest in the Wadenphul name.

For quick reference, find a list of Wikitree profiles with the last name Wadenphul etc. here.

Origins and meaning of the surname

According to name expert Professor Udolph, Zentrum für Namenforschung (see Facebook profile ), the name Wadenphul (and its variants) is carried by a rather small number of persons in Germany and is mainly found in the North and West of Germany.

The name probably refers to someone wading through a pool of water; some variants show a close resemblance to Low German words ("pohl" or "puhl" instead of "pfuhl"). "Waten" (or Low German "waden") means "to wade", "Pool" or "Pohl" in Low German means "pool" or "pond". Looks like one of our ancestors loved walking through puddles ;-)

The name is a record name ("Satzname") which usually consists of the imperative form of a verb ("wade!") and a noun or adverb, in this case "pfuhl". Both parts of the name must be compatible with each other.

Name Variants & Spellings

For the first part of the name, these variants are possible or have been seen:

  • Waden, Wade
  • Warten (mainly in profiles from the Birkenfeld area of Germany)
  • Waten (only found in US profiles as yet)
  • Wahl

and these for the second part:

  • pfuhl, phul, pful
  • pul, puhl
  • pool, pohl (only in US profiles as yet)
  • poel, poell, porll (found in German Rhine area, f.e. Monheim)

Thus there are quite a lot of name variants:

sorted here according to frequency on Wikitree, as of 28 Jan 2022, numbers give frequency on Wikitree

Links lead to a list of profiles which carry the concerning name variant.

Of course many of these could be the result of spelling or reading mistakes, especially those with a low frequency. But it makes searches for the name difficult, as we have to try so many variants.

The fact that there are so many name variants and spellings makes an ONS even more important, as it gives us a central space to combine all the name variants and spellings.

A different picture can be seen when entering the name variants into Geogen, a web service which shows name frequencies by checking the number of phone connections in Germany (see https://legacy.stoepel.net/). Here other variants are stronger (the first number in brackets give the absolute number, the second gives the expected number of people with this name variant).

Main areas where people with these name variants live is the Ruhrgebiet (Northrhine-Westfalia), Berlin, Hamburg & Lower Saxony, the Southwest (Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate) and Baden-Württemberg.

Wadenpoells from the Monheim Area, Germany

My focus right now is on Wadenpfuhls etc. from Monheim/Rhein, near Düsseldorf, Germany.

I have started by collecting Wadenphuls (et al.) from my part of Germany, the Hunsrück and Moselle area in the Southwest; most of them probably are descendants of Johann Peter Wadenpfuhl or Wahlpfuhl, born around 1650.

It turned out that Johann Peter originally came from Blee, now Monheim, near Düsseldorf - quite a distance in the 17th century. Thus I have started to check church books from Monheim. While I did not find Johann Peter's baptism record, the family seems to have been established there quite well, under the name variants Wadenpoell or Wadenpoel. I am now in the process of entering their profiles in Wikitree and connecting them to the study.

  • adopt Wadenphul profiles which are orphaned and try to complete them as far as possible,
  • try to connect unconnected Wadenphul profiles,
  • find more resources for us to use,
  • "adopt" a name variant and check its frequency in your chosen part of the world,
  • add information to the origin of the name and notables who carried the name,
