How to Write a Biography

You should become familiar with the style guidelines for biographies – Help:Biographies.

Biography building does not have to be hard if you follow a few simple rules:

Start on the important information, birth marriage and death. Make a short statements about each and add an inline source. e.g. John Smith married Mary Jones in 1844 at Place, County. (Add an inline reference to the source)
Add any children with sources.
Add any information found from the census. Insert this information either in date order or as a list underneath the biography with their sources.
You can then insert any other information you have, such as newspaper reports and historical information regarding events taking place at the time your ancestor lived along with their sources.
Add photographs, location maps and categories and anything else you consider to be important with sources.
If you have any extra information that does not belong in the biography, then add a Research Note.

Looking at biographies written by other people can provide ideas on how to make improvements.

Source Formatting

This page gives information needed to properly format sources – Help: Sources. Don’t forget to include this coding at the bottom of the profile:

== Sources ==
<references />

Genealogically Defined

An excellent biography meets certain criteria as outlined in Genealogically Defined page.
