Tables

  • Some Wikitree tables look gorgeous but when look at their construction it looks very frightening, and when you come across "a good example" like this one from G2G one gets totally put off.
  • One can start simply by doing a list

Name. |Occupation| place. |born year| died year
Robert Hughes|Tailor |Abergele |1821 |1891

  • There I have used the Line Break <br> for the next line. Another way of doing it is to start each line with a bullet point, achieved with an asterisk at the beginning of the line.
    • Name. |Occupation| place. |born year| died year
    • Robert Hughes|Tailor |Abergele |1821 |1891
  • Neither of these are pretty but they do the job. It's enormously easy for someone who has knowledge of the pretty tables to copy and paste from something like this.

Adding Links

  • The next thing you need to do is provide a link the individual items in your list.

Profile Links

  • If you go to the Profile of Robert Hughes you will see some itsy-witsy tiny green lettering to the right of his Profile name. This starts with a pair of scissors, then ID/Link/URL/Cite. If you click on Link then the link as magically copied. Paste it over the top of Robert Hughes in your table and the Link is automatically pasted.
  • You may not want all the stuff in the brackets, so just delete these in Edit Text box
    • Name. |Occupation| place. |born year| died year
    • Robert R. Hughes |Tailor |Abergele |1821 |1891
  • Have another look in the Edit Text box. You will see the structure of the link. It starts with double square opening brackets; then has the Wikitree ID; then so-called Pipe; then a description; and finally double square closing brackets.

Category Links

  • That's fine for Profiles, but doesn't work for Categories. We want to link Abergele in our table to the Abergele Category
  • Have a look in the Edit Box for that only one opening square bracket; then the URL; no pipe, just a space; then the description; and finally only one closing square bracket
  • However, your table now is a complex mess in the Edit Box,
    • Name. |Occupation| place. |born year| died year
    • [[Hughes-4567|Robert R. Hughes ]]|Tailor |[https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Abergele%2C_Denbighshire '''Abergele'''] |1821 |1891

Data First - Links later

  • so if your are going to use this relatively simple way, put your data in to begin with and the links in afterwards.
  • If you want Bolden text as I have done, highlight it in the Edit Text box and click on the B at the top of the box.
  • Now try it for yourself, by all means contact Steve Bartlett if you want to get an extra hint or two.
  • when you are confident about the linking move on to Part 2
