This page supports the activities of the GEDCOM Team, part of the Profile Improvement Teams section of the Wales Project. GEDCOM stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunication which is a file format for transferring family tree information between genealogy web sites.

Team Leader: Kathy (Urbach) Nava

Team Members: TBC

The team works on “cleaning” and improving profiles created via GEDCOM import.

Membership Requirements

Team members must make a least one contribution every six months towards the teams goals, communicate regularly with your Team Leader and respond to the six-month check-ins.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Wales GEDCOM Team, answer our G2G welcome post to join the Wales project.

Where to Begin

Data Doctors Suggestion List for Wales – The primary focus for this team is improving Wales related GEDCOM profiles. This link Data Doctors Suggestion List for Wales is the starting point. This list is updated weekly.

Scan down to the section titled Biography and then to codes 851 and 853 to find the profiles needing improvement. Note that each code has a link to a video providing additional information.

History of GEDCOM Profiles

When a GEDCOM is imported to WikiTree, the system aims to preserve everything that was in the original GEDCOM file. Any data that cannot be neatly imported into a data field is put in the text of the page. Admittedly, the results are not pretty.

A significant change was made in the GEDCOM import procedure in December 2015. There is a significant difference in the content and format of profiles imported prior to this date. Imports after that date should be “cleaner” and less involved to work on. Profiles imported before that date are in particular need of improvement. See Skipped and Translated Tags below.

Guidelines for GEDCOM Team

Multiple Skills - Team members will need some of the same skills as other Profile Improvement Teams members such as Bio Builders and Sourcerers.

Biography Writing - This page helps you decide how best to edit such a biography. The goal is to make it more readable, remove extraneous information, and make it conform with Biographies style guidelines presented in Help:Biographies.

Formatting Content:

  • Try This First - WikiTree AGC (Automatic GEDCOM Cleanup) is a free Chrome Extension that allows the user to reformat a profile that was created from a GEDCOM (by GEDCOMpare or the earlier GEDCOM import process). As the title indicates this program only works in the Chrome browser. For detailed information see WikiTree AGC.
  • This page contains a list of tags that are not included in GEDCOM imported profiles after December 2015 - Skipped Tags.
  • A list of tags that are translated to WikiTree acceptable tags can be found at this link - Translated Tags.

Tangled Families – Tangled families can be tricky to untangle. Some may be fictitious, so they need very careful researching. Merges can be misleading, so when checking for duplicates look at all the details not just the name. If you become stuck or confused, please don't struggle. Ask for an Arborist to help.

Seek Help - You may not be able to clear all the problems on a profile, so seek the assistance of the other teams that are part of the Profile Improvement Teams effort. Collaboration is a key word for the team.

Communication With Team Members

Members of the teams in the Profile Improvement Teams (PIT) group have two methods to communicate:

  • When you wish to communicate with members of your team, use the Comments section at the bottom of the team page.
  • Communication with members of all teams in PIT, use the WikiTree’s Wales Project Google Group to make a post and select the tag “Profile-Improvements” found at the bottom of the page.

The following are GEDCOM related pages that describe the export/import process. They are for informational purposes and not required to edit existing GEDCOM profiles.
