Wanganui Old Settlers

Note: 'Wanganui' is now spelled 'Whanganui'.

This is a list of early Wanganui, New Zealand settlers in the mid-1800's. The 'fathers' of Wanganui are a group of men and their families who had all passed away by the end of the nineteenth century. They were so called because it was largely due to their industry, courage and foresight that the town and surrounding districts of Wanganui was developed. In the early days of settlement the hardy pioneers had to endure privations and repeated danger that included being driven off their land, the burning of their homes, the laying waste to their crops, and the killing of their livestock.

The 'fathers' of Wanganui
  • Messrs. James Alexander, H. S. Harrison, W. H. Watt, Henry Churton, Henry Nathan,
  • Messrs. Hair, Bell, John Garner ('Father of Wanganui'), Parks, Taylor,
  • Dr. J. Allison, Dr. Rees, Dr. Wilson,
  • Major Nixon,
  • Captain John McGregor, Capt. T. B. Taylor, Capt. Campbell.
