John Ward Jr. (abt.1747-abt.1826), of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, freed all of his slaves in his will when he died in 1826.[1] Most of the enslaved were not listed by name in the will, but the manumission record of each enslaved person was recorded in the Pittsylvania County "Register of Free Negroes". These entries in the register give each person's name, a physical description of each person, and list family relationships with other people in the group of freed slaves.[2] Clement's The History of Pittsylvania County, Virginia said that about 70 of the people freed by Ward settled in Lawrence County, Ohio,[3]
