US Civil War: War Between the States Project

The Federal City nearly quadrupled in population and was overrun with soldiers during the Civil War. Train tracks criss-crossed what is today The National Mall (used as a cattle depot), a canal ran past The White House where Constitution Avenue now exists, and the city stank to high heaven, particularly in malarial summers. President Lincoln ordered the continued construction of both the Washington Monument (half-done and the quarry went dry) and oversaw the fitting of a new (today's) Capitol Dome halfway through the war.

Old Capitol Prison. With the start of the Civil War in 1861, the Union repurchased the building to use as a prison for captured Confederates, as well as political prisoners, Union officers convicted of insubordination, and local prostitutes. Many people arrested following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln were also held here.
