At this site, anonymously buried enslaved ancestors were found during road construction in 1960. These unclaimed individuals were associated with the Locust Grove plantation founded by 1848. The remains were reburied at The Mt. Tabor Church, is located at 1421 St. Stephens Church Road in Crownsville, Md. in nearby Chesterfield.[1] Loss of identity in life and death typified the enslaved African-American population in Maryland prior to the Civil War.
