History

Weches, Texas was founded by T.J. Hennin around 1847 near the present site of Mission Tejas State Park. In this area at one time was a large village of Tejas Indians and the mission, San Francisco De Los Tejas.

The settlement was originally named Neches after the nearby Neches river but upon applying for a post office they found that the name was already taken so they just substituted the name Weches.

By 1890, the population of Weches was around 100 people and had a Baptist Church, general store, a steam gristmill and a cotton gin. The Weches of today has no businesses as the population declined after World War II. Mission Tejas State Park still sees many visitors throughout the year.[1]

Historical Marker

Weches Cemetery Historical Marker

The caption on the marker reads: "Community of Weches Located near the site of 17th-century Spanish missionary activity. This farming community had its beginnings with the settlement of the McLean, Conners, Patton, and Gregg families, who had all arrived in the area by 1840. Originally known as Neches for the nearby river, the similar name Weches was adopted in 1887 when Post Office officials informed residents that "Neches" had been assigned to another community. The following year Alfred Monroe Gregg set aside land for the church, school and cemetery. The Weches Post Office closed in 1939. Texas Sesquicentennial 1836-1986
