Background

WikiTreers have identified two West-Horton intermarriages, where the Horton brides have not been placed among the family or as descendants of Stephen and Prudence (Rowley) Horton, yet reasonably personal information about them suggests they should be so placed. The two Horton brides, as below, married West brothers--Lodema Horton's husband, Simeon West, and Nancy Horton's husband, Reuben West, were both sons of Reuben West (1750-1836).

Died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Harriet West, in Ottawa, on the 19th inst., Mrs. Lodema West, aged 95 years, 4 months.
Mrs. West was born Sept. 16, 1778 at Hebron, Conn.; lived near Syracuse, N.Y., until about 1844, when she cam west, but in a few years again returned east, remaining here until four or five years ago, when she made her home with her daughter in Ottawa. She had been confirmed at and early age as a member of the Episcopal church and lived and died in that faith.
  • Nancy Horton (1782-1846) and the Frederick Van Dyke Horton (1820-1887) connection. In his 2009 article about the Horton family,[2] Henry B. Hoff reports about a family record he holds that was made by Nicholas Latrobe Roosevelt on 30 August 1889. The record memorializes various information provided to Nicholas by Frederick Van Dyke Horton, who credited some of the family information to "his cousin Mrs. Underhill née West ..." In the 2009 article, Hoff speculates that this "cousin" may have been Frederick's second cousin, "Celia Ann (West) Underhill (1813-1890)," and that her mother, Nancy (Horton) West, was otherwise "Anna Horton, born 16 July 1782, daughter of Joel Horton, born ... 14 May 1759, and his wife, Anna Sutton." Hoff describes further that Nancy would thus be the "granddaughter of Ebenezer and Keziah (_____) Horton ... [so that] Frederick and Celia were second cousins." Hoff writes that Joel Horton (m. Anna Sutton), did not leave a will (article footnote 93).
  • Stephen/Prudence family ....
  • Stephen/Heyltje family .... especially Heyltje's administration ...

In conducting the research about these two West-Horton marriages, a third marriage was identified.

  • Shipman Haughton (abt.1779-1859) is reported to have married married Sarah West, the daughter of Levi West (1754-) and his wife, Abigail Isham. In part, see Homer Worthington Brainard, A survey of the Ishams in England and America ... (Rutland, Vt., Turtle Publishing, 1938), 214-215 at 215 (79. Abigail Isham); digital images, InternetArchive (borrow), daughter "Sarah, b. -----; m. Shipman Horton or Houghton."

Who is Levi West. A survey of the Ishams in England and America (Familysearch.org), Images 238-9 of 704 cites the marriage of Levi West (b 1754) to Abigail Isham, noting son Levi West who "remained in Connecticut" (no dates) and daughter Sarah who married Shipman Horton.

Great work! Located this source also as Homer Worthington Brainard, A survey of the Ishams in England and America ... (Rutland, Vt., Turtle Publishing, 1938), 214-215 at 215 (79. Abigail Isham); digital images, InternetArchive (borrow), daughter "Sarah, b. -----; m. Shipman Horton or Houghton."

See also, Sarah Haughton (1789-1856), memorial 45276562 and gravestone images; web content, FindAGrave, reports burial at Saint Peter's Cemetery, Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut; inscription "wife of Shipman Haughton: Died Jan 18, 1856: Aged 72"; memorial maintained by Linda Mac; gravestone images added by KC.

Who is Shipman Horton See above reference to "12 Feb 1819 Grant of administration of the estate of Levi West of Hebron to Shipman Horton and appointment of Hiram Horton & Jeremiah Post as appraisers."

Worth noting that Ebenezer Haughton Sr. (1699-1788) had daughter Kezia, married Daniel Shipman (1733-1809).

As below, have created Shipman Haughton (1779-1859), presently unaffiliated to the larger family.

FamilyTree has PID L6H6-SRP Shipman Haughton (no dates, no sources, no parentage), father of a Lydia Clarissa Haughton. See This Lydia said married in Connecticut, 5 November 1846, Leonard Smith Vibert.

FamilyTree has PID G6VB-MY7, Shipman Haughton (1779-1759), son of Ezekial Horton (1737-1817) and Lydia Shipman (1742-1826). That Shipman reportedly married Sarah West (1784-1856), daughter of Levi West (1754-1806). Eight sources reported on Shipman's profile. FamilyTree reports Shipman's father, Ezekial, is son of above noted Ebenezer Haughton Sr. (1699-1788).

Shipman is buried at Saint Peter's Cemetery, Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut, as is his wife. Including these two, the other Haughtons there buried are below. (There are also many "Horton" graves reported at this cemetery)--

  • Shipman Haughton (1779-1869), memorial 45276594 and gravestone images; web content, FindAGrave, reports burial at Saint Peter's Cemetery, Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut; memorial maintained by Linda Mac; gravestone images added by KC.

In 1837, Alanson Horton moved from Connecticut to Perry, Michigan in Shiawassee County. By 1841, he had purchased a farm and moved his family there, constructing a wood frame Greek Revival house in the mid-1840s. Farming was difficult at first, but by the 1860s, the farm was prosperous, as were the farms and communities in the surrounding county. Alanson's eldest son, William Horton, joined his father in farming the land, but his career was interrupted when he enlisted in the 9th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. William returned home after the war, and by the late 1860s gained control over his father's farm and house, purchasing the shares that his two brothers and sister had inherited.

This is backing up one more generation, but on profile of Sampson Haughton (1667-1718) is notice of a 2018 article that addresses his family. According to the TAG website, this article is Sandra Lanham, "Richard^1 Haughton of Boston, Massachusetts, and New London, Connecticut: A Lost Will distinguishes two settlers of the same name, The American Genealogist 90 (2018):35-50.

At least I believe TAG articles are released for online access to AmericanAncestors five years after publication. If we can't access the article otherwise, it will hopefully be available online sometime this year.

See my comment, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Haughton-81#comment_8002674 --GeneJ.

Edited to add: I see this article is concluded in the next issue, The American Genealogist 90 (2018):100-109.

The table of contents for some past issues are available at https://americangenealogist.com/wp-content/uploads/90-2-BW.pdf

Just FYI ...

Made a humble attempt to update the profile of Ebenezer Haughton Sr. (1699-) to remove the erroneous date of death and add a basic child list reporting the nine skiddles born Ebenezer and wife. Believe we have all nine births supported by historical records (vital records from New London and Hebron).

Made further humble effort to see that profiles exist for each of Ebenezer's six sons. For the five sons who are believed to have survived--Stephen, Ebenezer, Elijah, Ezekiel and Joel--all but the profile of Elijah now contain continuing information, including child lists. Profiles are yet to be created for several mentioned in those child lists... something that I'll work on as time permits.

Edited to ask. As to Joel's daughter Anna, it's my initial reaction that we create a profile for Anna Haughton, associating her as a possible duplicate of Nancy Horton (m. West). What are your thoughts on this?

Thank you, Gene. Yes, I think that's very helpful for other researchers. It's certainly reasonable given the Hoff article makes the same suggestion. I'm cautious going beyond "possible" as "Nancy" is used in her marriage and burial records and in Reuben's probate records - and otherwise no hint of the name Anna. Her 19 Feb 1846 burial record cites her age as 63 years and 3 months - interpolating to an implied birth in Nov 1782...close to Jul 1782 for Anna. But I don't really know if that helps one way or the other.

As noted above, we inquired at the Smithsonian if they had the genealogical materials reference by Forman H Craton in his papers. We received the following very prompt response from David Haberstich, Curator of Photography, Archives Center and Interim Reference Coordinator: "I’ve reviewed our acquisition files for the Craton collection, as well as earlier versions of the collection finding aid, and I haven’t seen any evidence of a separate genealogical document. Apparently we never received such material."

Not sure where or if you want to note this: There were also a large number of Shipman-Horton marriages. See The Shipman Family in America for a number of these.
posted by Bill Clift
Thanks, I'll try to pull those.

Edited to add: Shipman entries in Connecticut: Vital Records (The Barbour Collection), 1630-1870, Hebron:124-125 (Shipman); digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors, includes,

  • Lidda, d. Samuell, b. Mar. 8, 1742, cites 1:37
  • Liddiah, d. Samuell, b. Mar. 8, 1742, cites 1:34

See the profile of Ezekiel Horton (1737-). Ezekiel and wife Lydea/Lydia reported parents of three children born Hebron. She is likely the Mrs. Lydia Houghton, died 1826, age 83 yrs.

Believe he is the son of Ezekiel Horton who died 1817 at Hebron and left a will. Ezekiel's will mentions son Shipman Horton and nephew Hiram Haughton, both of whom served as executors. The will is witnessed by Henry, Levi and Francis West. Levi could be any of three Levi Wests I have found (none of whom is the minor cited in the Hebron probate records). This the only reference to Henry and Francis West I am aware of in nearby generations. See this will at ancestry.com: https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/341230:9049?tid=&pid=&queryId=16fdcb01-2e33-4ecb-8f27-58baaeb2c8b1&_phsrc=lSB2735&_phstart=successSource

Sorry ... I should probably be able to figure this out, but do we have the profile for this Levi on WikiTree?

No, he is not on WikiTree. I cannot determine where he fits. I assume born between 1794 and 1798 and a cousin to Simeon. But that's a pure guess.
