Record’s show that an early tenant or owner of the two floor wooden structure at this location in 1880 has the initials F. M. and the W. VanPeyma Dry Goods & Grocery Store occupied the site as of 1866. Mr. Schaefer's Shoe Store was here in the early wooden years, and a new store front had been installed in 1891 prior to the building being destroyed by fire in 1894.

The three story brick building that remains today was built after the fire and housed Frank E. Schaefer's Shoe Store from 1896-1913. It was Nixon's Cafe 1900's and a saloon as of 1911. Julius Israel ran a clothing store before at this site before 1929. It was the New York Store 1929-55, and Carson's Jewelry from 1955 to date.

3-story, 3-bay flat roof masonry commercial building with modest Italianate styling; stone. Features full width recessed ca. 1970s storefront with projecting display cases at various heights atop piers of long, thin brick. Contemporary plate glass entry door and window. Large sign separates first and second stories. Windows typically boarded up with wood, stone sills, set inside segmental brick arches. Decorative corbelled brick at the cornice.
