General Information

Cemetery name: Western State Hospital Cemetery

Address: North side of Statler Blvd, Staunton, Virginia

GPS Coordinates: 38.1429890, -79.0657110

History

The two cemeteries are located on the north side of Statler Blvd. They are south of the main campus, which is on the southeast corner of the intersection of US 11 (Greenville Ave) and US 250 (Richmond Ave)

Originally known as Western State Lunatic Asylum, the hospital began operations in 1828 and continued until the 1970's. Its cemetery contains more than two thousand unmarked headstones. In a few cases, the plot numbers appear and, even less frequently, a name. Other information is provided only on those occasional stones that were purchased by family members.

The Archives Librarian of the Library of Virginia may be able to provide access (for $25) to some information pertaining to patients at WSH. They require proof of relationship to release records more than 75 years old. Use the FORM download at the top of the homepage. These are state records. Good luck!

The terrace numbers (first number) begin at the bottom of the hill, and the graves are numbered (second number) left to right.
