Name

Wetherden was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 as 'Watdena' or 'Wederdena',[1] the name deriving from old English 'wether' for castrated rams and 'dena' for valley.[2]

Geography

Wetherden is a village and civil parish in the county of Suffolk, England,situated about 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of Stowmarket and about 1.25 miles (2.0 km) west of the village of Haughley. In 2021 the parish had a population of 552. [3]

Domesday Book Entry for Wetherden, Suffolk

In the 15th century the manor of Wetherden was acquired by Sir John Sulliard (abt.1430-1488) who demolished the old manor house and built the current Wetherden Hall to the north east of village. A moated farmhouse now occupies the site at Base Green.[2]
