Whangarei Heads Cemetery is located in Big Munro Bay. Many of the early pioneers to the area were buried here, from 1864-1956. The cemetery was vested in Council in August 1968. The cemeteries management plan includes an annual site inspection and work to kept the cemetery in its current state. Cemetery only accessible through private property and then from beach at low tide. Cemetery is closed but still under the control of the Whangerei District Council. Funerals used to approach by sea. The old pioneer cemetery, is now very overgrown, but some of the headstones still standing are in wonderful condition and some are very beautiful. Graves are mainly of Scottish Pioneers
