Gostwick Name Study Page

No, this isnt about DNA. We have a pretty good idea that Joseph Gostwick of Baltimore, Maryland Colonies, was son of

Thomas Gostwick, Esquire (1619-1693) of London

What we dont know is how that Thomas fits into the Gostwick Tree. Its been a source of frustration for many researchers on this side of the pond.

I dont know the answer but will set some markers down as to who has not been eliminated with certain queries, or logical statements supported by facts and input from anyone that wants to give it.

To be Thomas' father, you would have to be: (1619-16=b bef1603), and you would not be older than 55 when fathering a child, (1619-55=b aft1564)

Born between (1565-1602)
Died after 1620 which is Thomas' est birth date

Many of the results returned can be excluded with only a little work

  • Roger Gostick, of Bushey Herts, d. aft 1616, London, married Ursula
  • His father, William Gostick, b. bef 1565, who we only know by parish recs
  • Edward Gostwick, Captain, b. 1572, d. Mar1634, married Ann
  • George Gostwick, b. abt 1576, Barkway, Herts, brother to above Edward, Capt
  • John Gostwick, b. abt 1585, d. abt 1628, Piddington, Northants, son of Sir William & Jane
  • John Gostwick, b. abt 1589, Wroxhill, Marston Moretaine, d. aft 1604, son of Robert & Margaret
  • Nicholas Gostwick, b. 12-Sep-1593, d. Jan-1638, Revesby, Lincolnshire, son of Sir William & Jane.
  • Robert Gostwick, son of William & Catherine, eliminated, as his death is 'bef 1570'
  • Roger Gostwick, b. 1568, d. 1645, married Constance Pelsett (Roger of Herts, lived Devon)
  • Sir Edward Gostwick, 2nd Baronet, b. Dec 1586, unlikely with such visibility
  • Sir William Gostwick, 1st Baronet, b. Nov 1565, unlikely with such visibility
  • Thomas Gostwick, b. bef 1575, d. aft 1630, Middlesex, children in Essex & Herts, wife Jane Evans
  • Thomas Gostwick, b. bef 1595, d. Dec 1635, Master Goldsmith of London, married Elizabeth; logically argued he left detailed will with no children mentioned.
  • William Gostwick, b. 1587, d. 15 Mar 1625, Cambridge, children in Marston Moretain, wife Judith Bendish
  • William * Gostwick, b. abt 1567, no evidence, hypothetical of William & Catherine of Herts
  • William * Gostwick, b. abt 1593, no evidence, hypothetical of Thomas & Jane Gostwick of Essex

In America, we find Joseph of Thomas, sire Thomas & Nicholas (b1700) who sires Joseph & Nicholas & George.

This lends me to feel a strong pull toward the Baltimore Gostwick's naming a child for the grandfather, Nicholas.

We should re-consider why out 7th entry wont work:
Nicholas Gostwick, b. 12-Sep-1593, d. Jan-1638, Revesby, Lincolnshire, son of Sir William & Jane.
