There was a public house at Whitmore by at least 1812. A newspaper report in The Staffordshire Advertiser, etc. 2 May 1812 did not name the public house.[1]

In 1819 William Malkin (bef.1791-1858) was innkeeper at the Durham Heifer in Whitmore.[2]

The Mainwaring Arms was founded about 1828; before that it was known as the Durham Heifer. It is on the corner of Whitmore Road and Three Mile Lane.

There was a sale of freehold property held at the house of Mr. Andrew Martin, the sign of the Durham Heifer, in Whitmore. The sale included the public house called the Durham Heifer, a newly erected Malthouse, the parcel of land called Hollygreave.[3]

The property was bought in 1822 by Edward Mainwaring (1736-1825).[4]

An inquest in February 1826 on the body of Charles Bates (1822-1826) was held at the inn, then referred to as the Bull and Heifer Inn.[5]

In July 1826 Andrew Martin was treasurer of the Whitmore Association with a meeting to be held the following year at the Durham Heifer Inn.[6]

In November 1827 there was a sale of timber advertised to be held from at the house of Mr. Andrew Martin, at the sign of the Durham Heifer, at Whitmore.[7] In March 1828 there was a sale of poles advertised to be held from at the house of Mr. Andrew Martin, at the sign of the Durham Heifer, at Whitmore.[8]

In August 1828 an auction sale of a property was advertised which would be held at the house of Andrew Martin, the Mainwaring's Arms, Whitmore.[9] In February 1829 there was a sale of poles advertised to be held from the dwelling house of Andrew Martin, the Mainwaring's Arms, Whitmore.[10]

The inn had formerly been called the Bull and Heifer and was rebuilt in 1844:

Captain Mainwaring visited Whitmore during April 1844, when the new inn, built to replace the old Bull and Heifer, was formally opened and called the Mainwaring Arms.[15]

The inn building opned 18 April 1844.[16]
