The following instructions are for the WikiTree Challenge Team Captains:
Contents |
Day Before the Challenge
Send an email to all the participants. Ask Eowyn for their email addresses. Use your email address for the main one and use BCC for the rest of the email addresses. (see sample messages below)
Attend Kickoff Zoom Meetings
The day the challenge starts there are two Zoom meetings at Noon EDT/4pm UTC and 8pm EDT/12am UTC. It would be great to attend one or both if possible.
During the Challenge Week
During the Challenge week, the Captain will:
- Look for opportunites for participants to jump in and work and share those in Discord
- Encourage participants to share interesting finds to the space page and G2G
- Encourage free-space page creations if there seems like something that would be good as one
- Answer questions when they can
- After brick wall ancestors are picked, send an email to the participants letting them know what they are (see sample messages below)
- On Wednesday send another email to participants encouraging them in the final stretch, letting them know what bounty points are still available, keeping them motivated, etc. (see sample messages below)
The Captain is also welcome to email participants more often if they'd like. Ideally, we'd send something every day but that's not always feasible.
Attend Wrap-up Zoom Meetings
The day the challenge ends there are two Zoom meetings at Noon EDT/4pm UTC and 8pm EDT/12am UTC. It would be great to attend one or both if possible.
After the Challenge
The Captain can send a message to the participants thanking them, etc, if they'd like. Eowyn will send a final message a few days later with the highlights.
The Captain can also join Eowyn for the live reveal with the Society if they would like/are available.

Day Before Challenge Starts
Hi Everyone!
Thank you signing up for this week’s challenge. I am so excited about working on the families of our special guest star ______________ and I am sure you are too. It’s going to be such fun. We start Thursday, August 3rd, at noon EDT (4pm UTC) and ended August 10th, at noon EDT, so not long now.
I am sure that you all know that we are trying to increase the CC7 of our guest star, but I really hope we will be able to do some interesting research and create some really good profiles and space pages. Remember that original research must always be done, and a primary or reliable source needs to be cited for every profile.
The challenge is also about us collaborating and working together. You can use G2G for this if you wish, but I think that the really good conversations will take place on Discord. Help:Discord If you are not already on Discord do come and join us. If you are new to the challenge and need help, just shout out, there is always someone around who will try to find the answer.
Do not forget to claim bounty points on G2G if you make a first unique connection for our guest star. We will announce the Brick Wall ancestors mid week and bounty points for breaking brick walls can also be claimed on G2G. And please add your interesting finds to the challenge space page, I am sure there will be a lot of them.

Brick Walls
Hello everyone,
Here are the brick walls:
These were posted earlier in discord and on the g2g post.
We have 20 interesting finds on the list. Numbers 10, 11, 13, 17, 18 and 19 DO NOT have the WikiTree ID of who added the interesting find. Please look at the list and see if one of them is yours and add your WikiTree ID (Langholf-2 18:50, 13 August 2023 (UTC) = 4 tildes). Eowyn will be sending out a survey to everyone and we get to vote for 7. Eowyn needs to know who added which interesting find so that when the votes are in and she sees which are the top 7 she can award the bounty points to the correct person.
We have 7 wars that are listed on the space page and there is at least one profile under each of them. There are 13 profiles that have been added under the military section on the space page.

Another Mid-week Sample
Hello KGS Team,
We are doing great with just over 2 days left. If you haven't joined us yet there is still time. Don't know where to start jump on discord and ask or email me. Have you checked to make sure you're on the scoresheet? We want to make sure you're getting your points for adding profiles. Make sure to add any interesting finds to the space page and you add your WikiTree ID. Mindy will be sending out the survey Wednesday. Which 7 will be chosen? Have you found any more ancestors that served in any of the wars? Have you added them to the space page?
We still have interesting finds that no one has added their WikiTree Id to. They are numbers 10, 11, 13, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, and 24. If any of these get chosen and there is no WikiTree ID Eowyn won't be able to give out the 15 points.
We have added a total of 2745 profiles so far. How many more can we add in the next 59 hours?
There have been 12,153 total edits made. How many edits will we have at the finish line?
How are we doing with the brick walls? We have broken down two. Can we break down more?
Discord has been busy. I love seeing the little groups of people that have been working together.

End of Week
Hi Everyone,
I want to say a big thank you to your all for the work you have done on the WikiTree Challenge this week. You have been awesome. Some of the lines have been really hard and we may not have added a huge number of profiles, but the quality of the work has been excellent. I am not going to start quoting figures but if you want more information, than you can look at the score sheet. https://plus.wikitree.com/Challenges/WikiTreeChallenge/20230803/User.htm and the space page Space:The_WikiTree_Challenge_2023_Challenge_12
So, thank you everyone, and I look forward to working with you all on another challenge soon.
Regards,
Joan
