WikiTree Sourcer support for Wikipedia

Sourcer will create citations for you and will also create links that you can paste into the biography. The latter was requested because there is a special syntax in WikiTree for links to Wikipedia that can be hard to remember.

Searching Wikipedia

This is currently pretty basic. It just searches for a persons names and dates.

NOTE: that the "Search Wikipedia" may not show up on your top-level Sourcer popup menu depending on your options settings. By default only 16 sites are shown. You can increase the priority of Wikipedia or increase the maximum shown to make it show up on your top-level popup or you can click on "Show all Search Sites...".

Creating citations

The main question here is how to format the link.

For example for this Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_More

There are multiple Sourcer options for how the link part of the citation should look:

LInk type to use in citation

Option Link encoding How it appears
Special WikiTree Wikipedia link [[Wikipedia:Hannah More|Wikipedia]] Wikipedia
Standard WikiTree external link [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_More Wikipedia] Wikipedia
External link to specific version [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hannah_More&oldid=1178109617 Wikipedia] Wikipedia
Visible URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_More https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_More
Visible URL to version https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hannah_More&oldid=1178109617 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hannah_More&oldid=1178109617

The default options uses the third example above.

If not using a visble URL, where to put link

If not using a visible URL there is the question of what text to use for the Hyperlink.

For example if you take the Wikipedia generated Chicago citation for the page mentioned above:

Wikipedia contributors, "Hannah More," Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hannah_More&oldid=1178109617 (accessed October 28, 2023).

and you want to hide the link. there are various options:

  1. The source title. Make the part "Hannah More" the clickable link text.
  2. Make the part "Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia" the clickable link text.
  3. Put some separate text "Wikipedia" at the end which is the clickable link text,
  4. Put some separate text "Wikipedia Entry" at the end which is the clickable link text,

Put the text 'Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia' in italics

If this option is checked that part of the citation is in italics.

Building links rather than citations

Sometimes you just want a link to paste into the biography that is not a source citation. Sourcer has a menu item on Wikipedia pages: "Build WikiTree Link" this puts the link text in the clipboard.

There are three options for the link format:

Link type Link encoding How it appears
Special WikiTree Wikipedia link [[Wikipedia:Hannah More|Hannah More]] Hannah More
Standard WikiTree External link [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_More Hannah More] Hannah More
Permalink to current version of page [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hannah_More&oldid=1178109617 Hannah More] Hannah More

and three options for the surrounding text:

Extra text option How it appears
No extra text Hannah More
Wikipedia Wikipedia: Hannah More
See <link> on Wikipedia See: Hannah More on Wikipedia
See <link> on Wikipedia for more information See: Hannah More on Wikipedia for more information
