This page has been accessed 11,055 times.

This page was created to group some of the project boxes, templates, and stickers I use often in one place. There is also some wiki coding further down on the page as well as rules and examples for sourcing. Hopefully everything is copy/paste.

Contents

Profile Boxes

These are boxes approved for use on profiles, whether individual person profiles or free spaces.

Navigation

Navigation Profile Boxes are used to ease navigation from one profile to another profile that is related in a significant way. It should only be used if the relationship cannot be expressed through our current database fields, such as parents, spouses, etc. Care should also be taken that boxes are only used on profiles that many people would want to navigate through the profiles.

Succession

Succession boxes are used to link profiles in a sequence, such as hereditary title holders, political office holders, or other sequence that is of great significance to the profile. It can be used on both person profiles and free spaces. Placement is above the Biography headline, but below any Research Note boxes and Project boxes. If there are multiple successions, they belong in one box, with no more than three recommended, and five the absolute maximum. Succession boxes are created and managed by projects. An image may be included if the project desires.

Research Note Boxes

The following Research Note Boxes are recommended as of April 2023. They are manually placed on any profile and are not created independently. They should be placed in the text section below any project boxes, but above the Biography headline. They should each be placed on their own line. These are just some of the research note boxes available. For a complete listing see here.

Templates

These are used on WikiTree to insert feature boxes on profiles and effect some special formatting.

External Templates

These are used to create a hyperlink to a webpage on WikiTree or to an external website. The primary use of this type of template is to protect the integrity of a link when a website alters their URL structure. It helps maintain error-free links without the need for editing. It is important to note that these templates are not intended to replace full source citation. They are appropriate to use within a source citation if you like. NOTE: If you use the WikiTree Sourcer, these links will be created for you. WikiTree Sourcer

  • Ancestry Links

  • Citation Needed is a template to be used in the body of the biography when stating a fact without a source to support it. However, it should be used sparingly and only when you are actively researching the profile. It is not to be used as an instruction for others to do the research. It is placed after the sentence that needs a citation.

Stickers

Stickers highlight important information about a person. They are placed below the biography headline. They can be grouped there or used further down in the text to highlight information. They are created by leaders. Just ask in G2G if you want one created and it will be considered. There should be no more than five per profile. This is the full list of stickers. If you want to add information to a sticker, try:

|addinfo=Name migrated from an unknown location to Canada.

These can be copied directly from this page and applied to your profile.

This sticker is for anyone who was born in Canada or who lived there. It is available in English as well as French. See more. The parameters are location (preferred), language (optional), and born-in (optional).

Died Young

This sticker is used on the profile of someone who "died young." How young? That is entirely subjective. There has been some discussion that is should be used on a child younger than twelve or so (in G2G). I personally use it for anyone who did not quite make it to adulthood, or died before age 21.

... ... ... died young.

Name Study

The is the procedure to using your own image on the Name Study sticker:

1. Upload the image of your choice.
2. Create a freespace called "Ream Name Study Info."
3. On this page, put only the following:

Witch Trials

This is a template for a sticker. It belongs just below the Biography Heading. Be sure not to use more than five stickers on a single profile. There are mandatory and optional parameters.

Will produce:
... ... ... was accused of witchcraft in witch trials

These are the options for the type= parameter:

  • accused (good for those accused but not executed)
  • accuser (self-explanatory)
  • executed (can assume they were accused if they were executed)
  • involved (judges, or if you are not sure of their involvement)

It is also possible to optionally add a second parameter by using a pipe [|].

... ... ... was executed for witchcraft in the Salem Witch Hysteria of 1692

Some examples:

  • Salem Witch Trials
  • New England

The sticker does not place the profile in a category. Some suggestions of categories to include are:

  • Accused Witches of England
  • Accused Witches of New England
  • Accused Witches of Norway
  • Salem Witch Trials
  • Witchcraft Accusers of New England

Embedding Photos in Text

One thing that some advanced WikiTreers started doing, especially those around the Profile of the Week community, is including images inside the text of a page. For example, see Chapman-4652

It can look great. But, if you don't know HTML, it's not easy. To make it easy, there is now some copy-and-paste code on photo pages.

For example, look in the very lower-right of a photo page such as https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Chapman-4652-6

To place two images on one line, for instance, use the following code:

Image sized by width:

Image sized by height:

The following are not recommended for individual profiles, but can be used on your personal pages.

Scrolling Text Box - Block Quote

Your Text goes here.

And so on and so on

Not sure I understand what this is for

So.....this is an experiment

I beg your pardon

<blockquote STYLE="outline:black solid thin; height: 100px; overflow-y: scroll">Your Text goes here. <br /><br />And so on and so on<br /><br />Not sure I understand what this is for<br /><br />So.....this is an experiment<br /><br />I beg your pardon</blockquote>

Drop Caps

Dropcaps are neat
They give that traditional book look.

<span style="outline:red solid thin;">"Circling words"</span>

<span style="color:red;">Coloured text</span>

<span style="font-size:200%;">Resized text</span>

You could use colour to highlight, in addition to bold, and/or italics.

The colors that are known to work are :

yellow yellow
green green
purple purple
blue blue

Only two colours seem to work to highlight the background of the text :

This text has a pale green background This text has a pale green background
This text has a pale orange background This text has a pale orange background

The others that work appear to be:

This is how to highlight part of a sentence highlight part
This is how to highlight part of a sentence highlight part
This is how to highlight part of a sentence highlight

Bold does not seem to work on the coloured text within the template, but it will outside it :

This is how to highlight part of a sentence highlight part

Bold does appear to work on the background highlight inside the template :

This is how to highlight part of a sentence highlight part

Multiple Columns

Eliza died on 20 August 1904 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The obituary states that she was 70 years old, but she was probably more like 84 years old based on the ages she gave in census records. Also, she would have been only 6 years old when her oldest son was born in 1842.

<span style="display:block;width:500px;text-align:justify;columns:100px 3;-moz-columns:100px 3;-webkit-columns:100 px 3;column-gap:40px;-moz-column-gap:40px;-webkit-column-gap:40px;"> Eliza died on 20 August 1904 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Linking to a Section on a Page

You can create a link to a specific section on a page.

Yenser

Yenser

Use the to indicate a link. Wanton-53 is the page identifier (it can be the page you are already on) Whatever follows the # indicates the section. Use a "|" to display what you want, in this example Yenser is an author and the target is a source.

Tables

I stole this from the G2G: I want to pass on what I have learned about WikiTables and ask that it may be included on Help:Editing_Tips#Tables

To separate cells on a single line use "||" (plain cell) or "!!" (bold, centered cell). Also, under "sortable", the following rules will make dates correctly sortable.

A field of 11 characters as "dd mmm yyyy", e.g.: "03 May 2018". The spaces can be replaced by "/", "." or "-". A field of 10 characters as "dd/mm/yyyy", e.g.: "03/05/2018". The "/" can be replaced by "-" or "." but NOT a space. A field of 8 characters as "dd/mm/yy", e.g.: "03/05/18". The "/" can be replaced by "-" or "." but NOT a space. The cell content is recognized as money, if the very first character is the Pound, Euro or Dollar sign (script bug: "$" will end up being sorted as numeric, but that may be ok unless you mix pounds and euros in the same column)

The cell content is recognized as numeric, if the very first character is a digit (0-9), ".", ",", "%", "?" or "$".

Anything else sorts as "case insensitive".

If a column does not lend itself to sorting (like images or comments), you can suppress the column from showing the sort arrow by adding a class statement:

"| class="unsortable" |columnName"

The script that does the decision on the type of data could be fixed so that money, dates and currency could work better. As it is now, a date starting with a digit could be sorted numerically rather than by date.

How to Source

Basic Definitions

  • A source is the record used in locating information. Sound genealogy research is built on a variety of sources.
    • Primary Sources - are records created at the time of an event, such as a birth or death certificate, deed, military record. Considered the most reliable.
    • Secondary Sources - are records created after an event such as delayed birth records, affidavits, or the birth data found on death certificates.
    • Derivative Sources - are sourced that are made from primary or secondary sources, such as books of abstracts of marriage records.
    • Compiled Records - are collections of information about a person, group, or family, such as published family histories. These are often based on primary or secondary sources or other compiled records.
    • Online Databases - are based on volunteer submissions, such as Billion Graves and Find A Grave.
  • A citation is a notation that connects the source to your research and supports any conclusions made.
  • A footnote is a reference system using numbers or special characters to alert the reader to a source citation at the bottom of the page.
  • An endnote is simply a footnote placed at the end of the document. Many researchers prefer endnotes since they don't interfere with the readability and flow of a document.
  • a bibliography is a listing of sources used but does not refer to specific passages and often lacks page numbers or other locators.

Do's and Don'ts

  • Don't delay capturing your source information. In the excitement of "the find," we often say to ourselves, "I'll go back later and cite my source." Certain sources can later be elusive such as websites and online databases.
  • Use a genealogy database application that helps you capture your source citations by providing formatting hints or templates.
  • Take advantage of style guides such as reference sheets and even online bibliography generation sites.
  • Be consistent. If you select a certain citation style, stick to it and don't mix various formats.
  • Specific source types require specific citation formats. A format for a source such as a book should not be used for an online database or website.
  • When citing internet-based sources, always note when the source was located, i.e. "accessed on March 29, 2009."
  • Don't be an Id.-iot. Avoid the use of Id. which is the abbreviation for idem, meaning "the same." Also avoid using ibid. - the abbreviation for ibidem - which means "in the same place."

Citation Components

A citation has the following components:

Author, Title, Publisher, Locator

  • Author: format can be "First Name Last Name" or "Last Name, First Name."
  • Title: format can be Title or Title. Also article titles may precede publication title.
  • Publisher: format often includes publisher location, name and year published and sometimes in parentheses.
  • Locator: usually a page number or range of page numbers depending upon the source type.

In addition, for online sources you may need:

  • Accessed: list date when source located as in "accessed on March 29, 2009."
  • Examined: list search criteria as in "examined for any reference to 'xyz'."
  • Link: link to where you found the source, if online.

Citation Styles

APA - the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is widely accepted documentation style within the social sciences but not often used in genealogy.

Mills, E. S. (2007). Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace. Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Pub Co.

Chicago - refers to The Chicago Manual of Style which is a style guide for American English. It is the style most often used by genealogists.

Mills, Elizabeth Shown. Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace. Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Pub. Co., 2007.

MLA - published by the Modern Language Association of America, the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing is an academic style guide used widely in the United States.

Mills, Elizabeth Shown. Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace. Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Pub Co, 2007.

Turabian - refers to A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses and Dissertations and named after its author Kate L. Turabian. In this example the publishing information is placed on a separate line beneath the cited work.

Privately Held Materials

According to Evidence Explained, citations to papers, mementos, correstpondence, and other items privately held have additional information that should be included in the citation:

  • identification of the item according to type
  • current or last-known whereabouts of the item
  • a description of the item
  • statement of provenance (chain of custody of an item from it's original owner to the present, as far as can be determined)

The full reference should include:

Span Tag Suggestions

Background

Span Tags <span></span> used to be created during the GEDCOM import process. They were also nice if you liked to list the sources at the bottom of your profile and then cite them freely throughout the biography without changing the order in which they appear at the bottom of the profile in the Sources section. They could also be useful if you happen to need to cite different pages within a source. You would get a list of footnotes, then the list of sources under the Sources heading.

Missing Span Anchors

This suggestion usually just means that there is a source on the profile with a named span tag, but it is not used in the biography anywhere associated with a fact. I found an old example of a profile that was created in 2011 and we are going to fix it right here, right now!

This is my friend, Thomas Kissinger. His profile was created in 2011 and does not appear to have been updated at all since then.

Thomas Kissinger. Click to view larger

In this view you can see highlighted under the SOURCES heading where <span></span> tags were used, but not used in the biography. This causes a "suggestion."

Look at the naughty span tags with their pretty yellow highlight.

Since they are not being used as an inline citation (or are they?) you can just delete the <span></span> tags. But you'll also notice that the profile is missing some required elements. At a minimum, each WikiTree profile must have:

Biography
Sources
<references />

Other headings come down to person preference as to style. Personally, most of my profiles only have these elements. If I do a profile for a famous person, of course, they may need more sections. Maybe you have someone with an extensive military career, or something else of note that happened in their life. Sometimes you need a Research Notes section if you need to explain how you came to a conclusion on say why you think someone or other is their parent; you may need to show your reasoning because a primary source has not been found. Some people like lists and tables and some people like narratives. I like narratives.

So this is how I fixed Thomas Kissinger with minimal editing:

Thomas Kissinger with minimal editing and all required elements

I think it's pretty ugly. This is a prettier version achieved by using the tags. I just wrapped the source within the tags and placed them after the fact that they support.

Thomas Kissinger with better editing according to me

Want to see how it looks?

Thomas Kissinger - After

You should really use the WikiTree Sourcer App. It just hangs out in your browser, you set up your preferences, then with a few clicks, you can get a perfectly formatted citation with links, baby! Links! I spent may an additional 10 minutes or less and improved our good buddy Thomas' profile with the Sourcer App:

Thomas Kissinger after the WikiTree Sourcer App treatment

Converting SPAN Tags to REF Tags

Both <span></span> tags and tags used to be recommended for use on WikiTree, but now only the tags are recommended. There are still a lot of <span></span> tags lurking in our branches and some people may not know how to get rid of these pesky buggers. It is really not that hard.

If you just use the reference tags, you'll get a list of the sources with numbers, representing the number of times each source is cited in the biography, appended to the front of the source. The order of the sources will change as sources are added according to the order in which they appear in the biography.

You can kind of see why some people may prefer the span tags, but the reference tags are simpler, hence their preference for use with the wider community. Let's just try to get along, okay?

As I understand it, if a profile currently contains span tags it is generating a "suggestion." The way to clear the suggestion is to convert the span tag to a reference tag. Not to worry, it is really quite simple. If you use the WikiTree Sourcer App it will create the reference-style tag for you automatically (just sayin').

Frequently Used Sources

Ancestry Sources

If you are going to use Ancestry sources, it is important to keep in mind that most people do not have access to these records since it is a pay site. For that reason it is important to either create numerous in-line citations to impart as much information as possible to those who do not have access or to at least transcribe or list as much information as possible. Some people are able to access many records through their public library.

I recommend that you use the WikiTree Sourcer to retrieve and format your citations for Ancestry.

  1. Download and install the WikiTree Sourcer. Be sure to format it to your preference.
  2. Build the source citation from the Ancestry Record Page.
    • Build an inline citation for placement within the biography to support a fact.
    • Build a source citation for placement under the Sources heading in a list.
    • You can also build a narrative with the inline citation.
    • If you will be using an inline citation to support more than one fact, you can manually name your
  • Burial and Vital Records: 1840-1937. This database contains more detailed records and includes digital images of the handwritten ledgers that were updated daily by the cemetery administrators. They may include the name, interment date, location in cemetery, and other demographic data such as age at death, cause of death, place of birth, street address, marital status, and undertaker.
    •

Thank you, Eric. I updated a lot of the page also.
Thank you for putting together this page! It should become official WikiTree Help. ;-)

Just a fyi, in the Ancestry Sources section, it uses a non-existent template "Ancestry" instead of "Ancestry Record"
