This is a transcription of the register copy of the will of Abraham Newell, a mariner of Stepney, Middlesex, England. Abraham drew up his will on 9 February 1633/4 when he was sick in body, and the will was proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 21 February 1633/4. [1]

In the name of God Amen. the eight daye of
February 1633 and in the nynthe yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lorde
Charles by the grace of God King of England. Scotland France and Ireland &c
defendor of the fayth &c I Abraham Newell of Ratcliffe in the parrish of Stepney
in the County of Midd[lesex] Marriner being sick in body but in sound memory praysed
be God therefore doe make and declare this my present last will and testam[en]t
in manner and forme followeing First and principally I com[m]end my soule to
Almighty God through whose mercy purchased by the death and passion of my
all sufficient saviour and redeemer Jesus Christ I doe assuredly believe the
forgivenes of my synns and that I shalbe a partaker of his heavenly kingdome
prepared for his elect And I com[m]end my body to the earth to be buried in decent
manner at the discretion of my Executor And touching the disposeing of my temporall
estate It is my will that first of all my debts which I shall owe unto any p[er]son
or p[er]sons whatsoever at the tyme of my decease shalbe truly answered and paied
out of such estate in goods and chattles as I shall leave behind me And my
will is that my loveing Mother in lawe Alice Rickard shall (besides her adventure
of tenn pounds in money which I receaved of her uppon my last voyage to the
Seas and which I will to be satisfied amongst the rest of my debts) have tenn
pounds more in like lawfull English money which last tenn pounds I doe
give and appoint unto her for and in satisfacion of the dyett of my wife and
my childe in the tyme of my last being at Sea, and in liewe of her paynes to be
taken for the good of my Childe in the execution of this my will And my will is
that whatsoever shall remaine of my estate either in my legacy part or porc[i]on
yet resting due unto mee by the last will of my mother Alice Newell widdowe
deceased or otherwise howsoever after my said debts legacy and funerall charges
payed) shalbe equally devided betweene my welbeloved wife Elizabeth Newell
and my sonne and only Childe Henry Newell to whome I doe fully and wholly
give and bequeath the same And of this my last will and Testament I doe
make and ordeyne my said wife Elizabeth Newell and the said Alice Rickard
my Mother in lawe my full and sole Executors intreating my said mother Alice
Rickard to take care of my said Childe and of the ordering of his portion to his
best benefitt In wittnes whereof I have to this my present last will and testam[en]t
sett my hand and seale the day and yeare first above written. Abraham Newell
Sealed signed published and declared by the said testator for his last will in the
presence of John Newell Andr Newall John Summers and John May Scr[ivenor]

[Probate in Latin] This will abovewritten was proved at London before the Honourable William Somes Doctor of Laws surrogate for the Honourable Sir Henry Marten knight Doctor of Laws at a commissary of the Prerogate Court of Canterbury constituted the twentyfirst day of February AD by the calculation of the English Church 1633, judgement to Alice Rickard one of the executors named in the will of the said deceased. Which commissary gave administration of all and singular the goods and credits of the said deceased to well and faithfully administer the same after swearing on the Holy Saints Elizabeth Newell the widow and other executor &c for certain reasons &c renounced and it is clear from the records
