This is a transcription of the original copy of the will of Christipher Buckle of Burgh under Stainmore in Westmorland, England. It was written on 18 January 1578/79.[1]
18th day of Januarye .1578 .
In the nayme of god. Amen.
I christoferr buccle of staynsmoor in burgh parish
of p[er]fite remebranc do make my last will in forme followyng.
first I
bequeth my soule to god, willing my body to be buried in my parish chirches
erth of burgh w[i]th godly [?] accustomyed and w[i]th dystributions to the poor accor
ding to my habilitie[?].
Item I will that agnes my wife shall have my fermhold during
her widooheid for the upbryingying and helpying of my children
Item I will th[a]t
my eldest doghtt[e]r shall have (by the licens and goodnes of my lord and lady) my
fermhold aft[e]r my wife.
Desiring my good freend michaell brunscaill o[u]r bailif
th[a]t he will be co[n]tent th[a]t h[i]s son mychaell shall mary and wedd my said eldest doghtt[e]r
and then to say if so maried I do gyve my full right and title of my said fermhold
w[i]th my warantes and indentures w[i]th all as full authoritie as in me lieth, and if
this can not be broght tp pass noe th[a]t my said eldest doghtt[e]r can not git[?] the same
fermhold then I do gyve my good will of my fermhold to my brother Jaymes
Buccle to [?]home I do gyv my r[?]th or seat in the church.
Item I do make my
said wife and iiij of my yongest doghttrs to be my executores.
Item I desire my
severall freends jaymes buccle my brother, edward brunscaill and arthur
