This is a transcript of the will of Edward Baber of Lincoln's Inn, Middlesex. His will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 20 June 1633. See: The National Archives, PROB 11/163/683.

Transcript

In the name of God Amen,
I Edward Baber of Lincolnes Inn in the County of Middlesex Esqr beinge of perfect and sound memorie though weake in bodie doe make and constitute this my last will and testament in maner and forme folloinge

ffirst I commend my Sowle unto thee my God who gave itt beseechinge thee out of thy greate mercy and for Christ Jesus his sake my only Saviour Mediator and Redeemer to receive ytt into thy kingdome of heaven O Lord remember not the faultes offences and fraylties of my yowth remember not my weightier nor more worldlie sinns of my riper yeares remember not my wilfull sinns nor my sinns of ignorance but o lord wash them all in the blood of that immaculate lambe Christ Jesus hide them in his woundes that they may never appeare eyther to my shame or condemnation

Secondly I Committ my bodie to the earth earth to earth dust to dust ashes to ashes and I desire that ytt may bee decentlie interred accordinge to the discrecion of my Executor and then I may say to corrupton thow art my mother and to the crawlinge wormes and dust yow are brothers sisters and

Companions O Lord thow hast shewed mee greate trowbles and afflictions in this worlde but I hope that I shall take quiett rest in this bedd of my grave untill such time as ytt shall please thee att that generall and greate summons to reunite both body and Sowle and to admitt ytt into thy kingdome of heaven

Thirdlie concerninge my worldly and temporall estate wch is but small my intent and meaninge is that ytt showld bee ymployed and disposed of as I shall heareafter declare by this my last will and testament

Inprimis I give and bequeath unto my owne brothers and Sisters vizt to each of them a ringe of the value of seaventeene shillinges

Item I give and bequeath to my ffather ffrancis Baber Esquire of Chew in the County of Som'sett and to my mother Mris Ann Baber to each of them a ringe of the valew of twenty two shillinges humbly desiringe them to accept thereof as a token and testimony of my love duty and reconciliation unto them There hath beene divers differences and suytes in law amongst us to the greate priudice of all our credditts and yf I have done them wrong I confesse I am unable to make them recompence and therefore I desire them heartly to forgive mee and yf they have done mee wrong I doe as sincerelie and truly forgive them

Item I give and bequeath unto Henry Pratt Esqr Alderman of the Citty of London and to Mris Mary Pratt his wyef my ffather and mother in lawe vizt to each of them a ringe of the valew of twenty two shillinges

Item I give and bequeath unto George Pratt to Richard Pratt and to Amy Pratt my brothers and sister in lawe vizt to each of them a rynge of the value of seaventeene shillinges

Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann Baber the somme of fifty pounds to bee payd unto her when she shall attaine to the age of one & twenty yeares

Item I give and bequeath unto Henry Baber my sonne and heire apparant my English bible in folio and my ffrench bible in folio to bee delivered unto him when hee shall accomplish the full age of twenty yeares

Item give and bequeath unto the library lately erected for the use of the schollers of westminster schoole my Quintilians Institutions and Plutarchs lives in English

Item I give and bequeath to the librarie of Trinity Colledge in Oxford my Speedes Chronicle my Polani Syntagma Theologie and my Plinies naturiall history

Item I make constitute and appointe my Dearely beloved wyef Elizabeth Baber my sole Executor of this my last will and testament and I doe give devise and bequeath all the residue of my estate my goods and Chattels reall and personall monies plate howshowlde stuffe detts and duties whatsoever unto the sayd Elizabeth Baber my sayd wyfe and to her Executors Administrators and Assignes desiringe her that shee wilbee carefull of my Children and that shee will give them civill and religious education accordinge to her ability

And now o Lord I beseech thee to blesse my Children wth thy best blessinges o Lord give them thy grace and continually assist them with thy holy spirritt that thy may never fall into any eminent or notoriouse crymes but that they may leade godlie civill vertious and religious lives O Lord make them fruytefull and let them increase and multiply make their posteritie numerouse and flowrishinge through many successions of ages and after this lyfe ended receive them O Lord into thy kingdome of heaven

This is my last will and testament whcih I desire showld bee duly and faithfully performed fullfilled and executed accordinge to my intent and meaninge herein expressed In wittnes wherof I have hereunto sett my hand and Seale this twelfe day of June in the eighth yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of God of England Scotland france and Ireland Kinge Defender of the fayth &c Annog Dni one thowsand fixe hundred therty two Edward Baber Sealed and delivered and published in the presence of William Timme John Jarres William C[...] Richard ffrances his marke
