Will proved 10 June 1597 on the oath of Thomas Ward, notary public, for Thomas Cayley and Edward Cayley, sons of the said deceased and executors named in the will
In the name of God Amen. The xi [vi crossed out] daie of Februarie in the yeare of our Lord Jesus Christ One thousand five hundred ninetie seven I Edward Cayley senior of the parish of Lamberhust within the countie of Kent yeoman whole on minde and of good and perfect remembrance (laude and praise be given to Almighty God) and yet knowinge that as nothinge is more certaine than death, soe nothing s more uncertiane than the houre of death and therefore minding to prepare my selfe and to dispose and set in order those temporall goodes wherewith God hath blessed me Doe ordaine and make this my present Testament and last will in manner and forme followinge First and principallie I bequeath and comend my soule unto Almightie God my maker and redeemer trusting through the onlie meritts of Christ Jesus and his precious bloodshedding to be saved and my bodie to be buried in the church of that parish where it shall please god to call me out of this present life. Item I give and bequeath unto the most poore in neede people of the aforesaide parishe of Lamberhurst the somme of fifty three shillings and fouer pence of good and lawful monie of England to be distributed unto them by my Executors undernamed and two honest men of the same parish in manner and forme followinge that is to saie at my buriall twentie shillinges, and at the next Easter after my decease other twentie shillinges and at the next Easter after that thirteen shillinges fouer pence in full paiement of the saide somme of fiftie three shillinges fouer pence Item I give and bequeath unto Thomas Cayley my sonne one ioyned bedstedd now standeth in the parlor one feather bedd one feather boulster one blankett one coverlett one good paire of sheets at the discretion of Catherine my wife Item I give and bequeath unto Edward Cayley my sonne my two cupboardes whereof one standeth in my hall and the other in my parlor which I will that Catherine my wife shall have the sole use thereof duringe her naturall life Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Catherine all my corne and graine as well in my barne and other houses as growing on the grounde Item my will and minde is that all my houshold stuffe and ymplements of householde, not before willed nor bequeathed shall imediatelie after my decease be devided by fouer indifferent men into two equall parts whereof one part I give and bequeath unto the saide Catherine my wife at her owne choice, the other part I give and bequeath unto my saide two sonnes Thomas Cayley and Edward Cayley equallie to be devided betweene them Item I give and bequeath unto Edward Cayley sonne of Edward Cayley my sonne the somme of one hundred and fortie poundes of lawfull mony of England which I have had and shall have of Thomas Dike of Penipburie [Pembury] in the saide countie yeoman for such timber woodes and underwoode as I latelie solde unto him which one hundred and fortie poundes I will and my minde is shalbe bestowed uppon certaine landes and tenements by the saide Edward Cayley my sonne as sone as it shall or maie be after my decease to the use of Edward Cayley sonne of the saide Edward Cayley my sonne his heires and assignes for ever And my will and minde is that the saide Edward Cayley my sonne and his assignes shall have the use and commoditie as well of the saide one hundred and fortie poundes as of such landes and tenements as shalbe bought and purchased to the use of the saide Edward Cayley sonne of the saide Edward Cayley my sonne his heires and assignes with the same one hundred and fortie pounds until the saide Edward Cayley sonne of the saide Edward Cayley my sonne shall come to his full age of thirtie yeares alsoe the residue of all and singular my moveable goods and chattells not before willed nor bequeathed all my debts and Legacies being paide I give and bequeath unto my saide two sonnes Thomas Cayley and Edward Cayley equallie to be devided betweene them which Thomas Cayley and Edward Cayley I doe make and ordaine my executors of this my present Testament and last will.
[There follows a long section regarding lands and property, giving half to be divided between his sons Edward and Thomas, and the other half to his widow for life while she remained unmarried, with provision for an annuity if she remarried or moved away.]
