This is a transcription of the register copy of the will of [Edward Cooke] of Sutton cum Lound (here called Sutton Super Lound), Nottinghamshire, England, a husbandman. Edward drew up his will on 18 September 1657, and it was proved at the probate court which replaced the Prerogative Court of Canterbury during the period of the Commonwealth, on 15 February 1658/9. [1]

In the name of God Amen September the eighteenth Ann[o] d[omi]ni
one thowsand six hundred fifty seaven I Edward Cooke of Sutton Sup[er]
Lound in the County of Nottingham husbandman beinge sicke in body
but of perfect memory praysed be God Doe constitute and ordeyne this
my last will and testament in forme and manner followeing First

I Comitt my soule into the hands of God Allmighty my Creator
and preserver assuredly hopeing through the meritt and mercies of
God in his Sonne Christ Jesus to obteyne everlasting Salvacon, and my
Body I comitt to the earth from whence it came to be decently buried
at the discrec[i]on of my Executrix expecting a ioyfill resurrect[i]on and for
that Temporall meanes with the which it hath pleased God allmighty
to blesse me with, my will and testament is and I doe give & bequeath
unto Elizabeth Cooke my loveing wiefe All the goods Catles & Chattells
which there is dureing the terme of her naturall liefe, saveing that she
the said Elizabeth my wiefe shall pay weekely the some of Three pence to
Dorothy Cooke my mother dureing her natural liefe

Item my will
is that she the said Elizabeth my wiefe shall have the some of Five pounds
at her disposall.

Item the rest remayning at my wiefes decease my will is that
it be devided equally into two parts one whereof shee the said
Elizabeth my wiefe shall have at her owne disposall the other halfe to
be devided into three parts one whereof shalbe given to my brother
Robert Cooke another part to my brother William Cooke if soe be he
discharge that some of Five pounds which I for him am bound for, but if
soe be the said William Cooke discharge not that debt then this second
p[ar]te is to go to my wiefe, the third part is to be equally devided amongst
the fower parties followeing, First George Cookes children, secondly
Thomas Cooke and his children Thirdly Elizabeth Stafford and her
Children Fourthly Anne Johnson and her children

And Lastly my will is that at the decease of my wiefe all
debts be paid and funerall expences discharged before the goods bee
devided as before menc[i]oned in this my last will and testament In
witnes whereof I have sett my hand and seale the day and yeare Above
written Edward Cooke his marke Wittnesses hereof Wm Ombler
Minister, Humphrey Pike, Edward Swindall his mark

The Fiveteeeth day of February one thowsand six
hundred fifty eight English Stile issued forth l[ett]res of Administration w[i]th
the will annexed to Elizabeth Cooke widdowe the relict principall
Legatary of Edward Cooke late of Sutton in the County of Nottingham
Deceased to administer the goods chattells and debts of the said deceased
according to the tenor and effect of the said will she being sworne
by Comission truly to administer &c
