Last Will and Testament of George Grant, 1824

In the name of God, Amen. I, George Grant senior, of the county of Mason and State of Kentucky, being in good health and of sound mind and well knowing the certainty of death doth make and order this my last will and testament in form and manner as follows: I give and bequeath to my wife Mary Grant, my whole estate both real and personal during her life or widowhood after my death, and my desire is that at the death or remarriage of my wife, that my estate be divided amongst my son, George Grant, and my daughters as follows. Namely, my son George Grant and my daughters Mary Grant and Peggy B. Grant, and Judy Grant, likewise my daughter Nancy Moss once Nancy Grant and at the death of my daughter Nancy Moss her part of the estate to be divided amongst the children of my daughter Nancy Moss.

I likewise leave to the children of my son James Grant one child's part to be divided amongst them. To my daughter Betsey Lowry once Betsey Grant, I have already given negro Lucy and Milly with their Increase which she has now in possession and my daughter Betsey Lowry nor her heirs to have any other part of my negro property. I likewise give to my daughter Mary Grant, Negro Dick and George and Miny with her increase. To my daughter Peggy B. Grant, I give Negro Jerry and Willis and Lucy and Eliza with their Increase. To my daughter Judy Grant, I give negro Daniel and Tom and negro girl Phoebe and Lydia with their increase.

As I have given my children that have left me a bed and furniture it is my desire that Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant have a bed well furnitured each of them. And I likewise give to my daughter Mary Grant and Peggy B. Grant all the quilts and counterpanes of their own make each of their own. And after the death of my self and my wife my desire is that my daughters Mary Grant, Peggy B Grant and Judy Grant posses my land for a home as long as they live or keep unmarried. At their death or marriage, to belong to my son George Grant, the negros I have given to my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy Grant and Judy Grant is their free gift besides their equal share of what I die posessed of. And lastly I do appoint my son, George Grant and Kendell Moss as executors to this last will and testament. In witness thereof I hereunto set my hand and seal the fifteen day of October eighteen hundred and twenty four.

Signed and delivered acknowledged in the presence of Wern Parker, M. Shackleford, George, Shackleford, Lilas Callaron, Francis L. Hord. Attested by Mason co. Court Sept 1827, Marshall Key.
