The Will of Grace Grobham of Bishops Lydeard

In the name of God Amen. The thirteenth day of September in the sixth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord Charles by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King defender of the faith One thousand six hundred thirty I Grace Grobham of Bishop’s Lydeard in the County of Somerset, being at the present God be praised of perfect health and memory yet considering the shortness and uncertainty of my time here in this wretched vale of misery I have thought it good to dispose of such things ( as god of his great goodness hath lent me ) by this my last will and testament which I have here set down in manner and form following.

First I commend my poor Soul unto the hands of Almighty God. And my body I leave to the earth from whence it came to remain in corruption till the latterday.

First I give to the Lady Margaret Grobham a gold Ring of twenty shillings price as a token of my love, not of her need.

Item I give unto my dear brother John Grobham an hundred pounds.

Item I give unto my cousins John Howe and Agnes Grobham my sister’s children thirty pounds equally to be divided.

Item I give unto Richard Grobham Howe, John Grobham Howe, Agnes Howe & Susan Howe, sons and daughters of my said cousin John Howe ten pounds equally.

Item I give unto my cousins George Grobham, Joan Grobham and Mary Grobham, children of my said Cousin Agnes Grobham fifteen pounds equally to be divided. And do also give them all such money as is now due to me at the present by their father, John Grobham.

Item I give unto Elizabeth Bampton, my sister’s daughter thirty pounds . And do hereby pardon and forgive her husband John Bampton all debts due to me by bond or otherwise.

Item I give unto my said Cousins Elizabeth Bampton and Agnes Grobham all my wearing apparell.

Item I give unto my Cousin George Howe my sister’s son, my lease interest and term of years which I havein a Tenement lying in Estcombe in the parish of Bishopp Lideard.

Item I give unto John Grobham of Wishford, my Cousin, forty shillings.

Item I give unto Grace Prise, Thomasyne Chattocke and Joan Longe, daughters of Agnes Stevens forty shillings apiece.

Item I give unto the poor of Bishopps Lideard the place where I was born five pounds.

Item I give my lease interest and term of years which I have in a pasture of ground lying in Saltmore by a grant from my deceased brother, to my brother John Grobham to be by him disposed to the poor as he shall think fit.

Item I give to the poor of Wishford in the County of Wilts.forty shillings.

Item I give unto the poor of Hinton and Downton in the said County forty shillings apiece.

Item I give unto each of my Godchildren five shillings.

Item I give unto Edith Matingley my friend and Gossip forty shillings.

Item I give unto Margaret Grobham Howe, George Grobham Howe and John Howe, children of my Cousin George Howe fifteen pounds equally to be divided.

Item I give or allow to my good brother-in-law John Howe Twenty pounds.

Item I give unto Joane Howe, Elenor Prise and ChristenChattocke, servants to my said brother Howe, Twenty shillings apiece.

All the rest of my goods & chattels( my debts legacies and funeral charges first paid ) I give and bequeath unto my Cousin George Howe my Sister’s son whom I do make my Executor of this my last will and testament. And my brother-in-law John Howe and my Cousin John Grobham of Heathcombe my Overseers. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written Signed Grace Grobham Sealed and delivered in the presence of Jo.Grobham, John Howe.
