Will of Richard Duggleby (abt.1400-1452)

  1. In God's name. Amen. 27th day of the month of April in the year 1452.
  2. I, Ric' Dogilby, vicar of the parish church of Wharrum appoint and make
  3. my will in this manner. Firstly, I leave my soul to God Almighty,
  4. to the Blessed Virgin Mary and all His saints, and my body to be buried at the church of Saint Mary's
  5. of Wharrum. Item I leave my best animal in the name of mortuary payment. Item I leave
  6. 2 pounds of wax to be burned about my body for my divine service. Item I leave to the church
  7. chaplain for my funeral obsequies' 6 d. Item I leave to the cleric of the aforesaid parish of Wharru'
  8. 2 d. Item I leave to the [same?] church cleric compensation of 1 d.[1] Item I leave Marione my sister 2 \
  9. cows. Item I leave Willim' Dogilby my cousin[2] 2 oxen[3], 2 horses and 1 cow.
  10. Item I leave Beatrici my servant 1 cow and 2 sheep. Item I appoint the
  11. aforesaid Willim' and Mariona as my true executors to this my present will for the arrangement
  12. of the salvation of my soul. To the church with respect to the fees (easements) better due I appoint Lords Johenn' Calsthorn'
  13. [and] Mathew Kyrsabye' to complete this my last will and aforesaid wish.
  14. Proved 30th April 1457.

  1. The handwriting is hard to read which makes this sentence confusing. I think in this case interesse probably means compensation for damages; it could also perhaps .allude to interest on a loan.
  2. The handwriting is illegible, but it looks like the word is consobrinus, cousin.
  3. Possibly 2 bulls.
  • The script is illegible. Usually people left their best item of clothing, their best animal or a book for mortuary payment. ' Funeral rites.
