This is a transcription of the register office copy of the will of Samuel Iremonger of Donnington, Berkshire. It was written on 6 July 1643 and proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, administration granted to Bridger Iremonger the relict on 28 October 1650.

In the name of God Amen i Samuel Iremonger
of Donnington in the County of Berks[hire] gent the sixth day of July Anno Domni
one thousand sixe hundredd forty three and in the nynteenth yeare of the Raigne
of our gracious soveraigne Lorde King Charlesbof England etc. considering and
well weighing with my selfe the fraylty of mans life the certaynty of my death
and the incertaintie of the tyme thereof Doe therefore in my good and perfect
healthe and memory (God be therefore praised) make and ordayne this my last
will and Testament thereby revoking and adnulling all other and former

Wills by mee made First and before all I committ my soule to God who gave it and
trusting assuredly for Salvation by all the sufficient meritts of Christ Jesus my
blessed Saviour and Redeemer my body I Committ to the Earth to be decently
buried according to the discretion of my Executors hereafter named As for the
disposition of my worldly estate whomme of God of his mercie hath made mee owner
I doe in the first place give and devise unto my loving brother in lawe Richard
Barnard and my loving friend and Kinsman John Mundy of Newbury Gent
and to their heyres and Assignes for ever my mansion house in Donnington
wherein I now dwell and all houses buildings Orchards gardens waters Fishinge
Cloase grounds lands and hereiditaments whatsoever thereunto belonging lying or
appurteyning upon hope trust and Confidence and to the intente and purpose that the sayd
Richard Barnard and John Mundy and their heyres after my decease will with as much speede as
Conveniently they may make sale of the same for the raising of money for the payment of
my debts and legacies hereby bequeathed from whereas I bought the Inheritance of Donnington
Mille in the name of William Helliard Robert Helliard and Richard Helliard to them and
their heyres and of the Meadowes Waters Fishings and other Commodities thereunto belonging
I hereby declare that thye same purchase was made in their names for my benefitt And
I doe hereby will and appointe and desyre my sayd loving friends and kinsmen William
Helliard Robert Helliard and Richard Helliard their heyres and Assignes after my decease
to convey and assure the sayd Milles and Meadows grounds and premisses unto such person
and persons his and their heyres and Assignes as my sayd brother in lawe Richard Barnard
and John Mundy their heyres and Assignes shall bargaine and sell the same and appointe the same
to be conveyed And I doe hereby desyre my sayd loving brother in lawe and the sayd John Mundy
their heyres and Assignes with as much speede as conveniently they may after my decease to
bargaine and sell the sayd Milles and Meadows with the appurtenances for the raysing of moneye
for the payment of my debts and legacies bequeathed by this my will as herein after is instuctedd
And I doe hereby give and bequeath unto my sayd brother in lawe and John Mundy their heyres
and Assignes all my Estate Terme interest trust use charge & demande whatsoever of in
or to the sayd Milles Meadows grounds and premisses every part or parcell thereof

Item I give and devise unto my sayd brother in lawe Richard Barnard and John Mundy
their heyres and Assignes all other my lands Tenements and heriditaents whatsoever situate
and being within the Kingdom of England whereof or wherein I have my Estate right tythe
& interest Upon trust and confidence notwithstanding that they and their heyres will sell
and dispose of the same for the benefitt of my Children as hereinafter ment[i]oned

Item my
will is and I doe hereby appointe that out of the moneys to be made uppon sale of my sayd lands as
aforesayd my debts be first paid and discharged

Item I doe hereby give and bequeath unto my
Eldest sonne William Iremonger two hundred pounds to be paid unto him at his age of one and
twenty yeares

Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne Francis the summe of one hundred pounds
to be likewise paid at his age of one and twenty yeares

Item I give and bequeath unto my Eldest
Daughter Bridgett the summe of one hundred pounds to be paid unto her at her age of one and
twenty yeares or day of marriage which shall first happen

Item I give and bequeath
unto all the rest of my Children Elizabeth Anne Elianor Martha Margaret and the child
wherewith my wife now goeth fifty pounds a peece to be paid unto them at their severall ages
of one and twenty yeares or dayes of their severall marriages which shall first happen

Item
my will and meaning is that if my sonne William shall happen to dye before he shalbe
capable to receave the same his portion by the true meaning of this my will That then the
portion to him bequeathed shall survive and be paid to my sayd next sonne Francis And that
if my sayd sonne FRancis shall dye before he shall be capable to receive his portion by the
true meaning of this my will that then his sayd portion shall survive and be paid to my
sayd sonne William if he shalbe living And if he shall be dead then the sayd portion
of my sayd sonne Francis shall survive and be paid to and amongst my other
Children then surviving share and share like And alsoe if my sayd sonne
Francis shall be dead before his sayd protion as aforesayd Then my will and
meaning is that the said portion of my sayd sonne William shall survive and be
paid

paid to and amongst the rest of my Children then surviving share and share
like

Item my will and meaning is that my deare and loving wife shall have the
education and the breeding of my sayd Children during her life And that for the better
doeing of the same shee shall have the whole benefitt and profitt of their sayd
legacies and portions until they them selves shalbe respectively capable to
receive the same

Item my will and meaning is That if my debts being first paid
my sayd lands shall upon sale thereof together with my goods and personall
Estate raise and make more money then my legacies by this my will bequeathed
that then the Overplus shall goe for the further increase of my sayd Childrens
portions in manner following that is to saye the same being devided in to fourtene
parts fower parts thereof unto my sayd sonne Eldest sonne William Two other partes
of the sayd fowerteene unto my sayd sonne Francis and two other partes more
of the sayd Fowerteene unto my sayd daughter Bridgett And the residue of the
sayd fowerteene parts to and amongst the rest of my sayd Children That is to saye
for every fifty pounds before bequeathed a parte of the sayd Fowerteene parts

Item my will and meaning is that the sayd Overplus be paid unto and amongst my
sayd Children in such manner as their sayd former legacies before bequeathed
And that if other or any of them shall happen to dye before they shalbe capable
to receive the same by the true meaning of this my will That then their sayd
severall partes in the said Overplus shall survive and be paid to each other and
to and amongst them respectively as their sayd former portions or legacies
hereby bequeathed are appointed to goe

Item my will and desyre is that my
sayde two sonnes be bredd schollers at some Universitie if my wife shall thinke
good And that shee with the benefitt of their portions shall be able to doo the same
And if not my will and desyre is that they be bound apprentisse to some good trade
or profession at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named (But of my wife
only whilst shee shalbe liveing) And my will and request is that after the decease
of my sayd loving wife my sayd brother in lawe and John Mundy and their Asssignes
shall and will take care of the education and breeding of my sayd Children in
the feare of the Lord soe for forth as the benefitt and profitt of their sayd
portions will performe the same But during the life tyme of my sayd deare
and loving wife I leave the education and breeding of them unto her my sayd
wife

Item I give to the poore of Donnington and Shaw the summe of Tenn
shillings and to the poore of East Woodhay Tenn shillings

Item my desyre is
that the Newbury Bells doe Ringe at my Funeral. And I give and appointe to the
Ringers Tenn shillings amongst them

Ite my will and meaning is that
my sayd loving wife shall have the use of all my goods and houshold stuffe during
her naturall life And then the same to be sold and the money thereof raysed to
goe towards the payment of my debts and legacies hereby bequested But I
doe desyre my sayd lovng wife to give way to the sale of soe much thereof p[re]sently
after my decease as shee can well spare for the most speedy payment of my
debts

Item I give and bequeath unto my sayd brother in lawe Richard Barnard
and John Mundy Fifty shillings apeece to buy each of them a Ringe for their care
and paynes to be taken in the performance of this my will

Item I give and
bequeath all the rest of my goods and Chattells whatsoever unto my sayd
deareand loving wife my sayd brother in lawe Richard Barard and the
sayd John Mundy whome I make and ordayne Executors of this my last will
and Testament in trust for the benefitt of my sayd Children

Item whereas
upon the marriage of my wife I surrendered my oppyhold lands and Inheritance
in Woodhay to the use of Robert Mason Esquire and his heyres which was in trust
for the benefitt of my wife I still lease the same at her disposall

Item my
will is and I doe hereby appointe that all such charges and expenses as
shalbe disbursed and layed out by my sayd brother in lawe Richard Barnard
and John Mundy their Executors or Assignes in and about the execution of
this my will shall be defalted and paid unto them out ofthe moneys to be made

hereby in them proposed

Item my will and meaning is that if any debts being
first paid any sayd lands uppon sale hereof together with my goods and personall
estate shall not raise and make soe much money as my legacies by this my will
bequeathed That then there shalbe an abatement made in any sayd childrens legacies
respectively in manner as the Overplus if any shalbe it to be raised towards them
respecyively In witnesse whereof I have hereunto putt my hand and seale the say and
