The Will of William Terry of Thakeham, Sussex, Farmer, 1808
In the name of God Amen I William Terry of the parish of Thakeham in the county of Sussex farmer being of sound and perfect mind memory and understanding do make and declare this to be my last Will and Testament first, I resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God my most merciful creatormy body I commit to the Earth in hope of a happy Resurrection Through the mercy and mediation of my ever blessed Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ who died for our sins and rose again for our justification and as to the worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me I dispose thereof as follows (that is to say)
First I give devise and bequeath onto my wife Luce Terry the whole and sole use of all my goods chattels household furniture stock and effects my just debts and funeral expenses being first paid and satisfied Also I will, and direct that my said wife shall from and after my decease hold use and occupy the farmland and premises, which I myself now use and occupy namely, Apslee Farm and lands until my Executor hereafter named shall have attained the age of twenty one years after which time I will and direct that half the said goods chattels stock and effects be equally divided between each of my sons James Terry William Terry Tobit Terry and Thomas Terry and my daughters Charlotte the wife of Leonard Matthews and Esther the wife of Henry Ockington both of Thakeham aforesaid and Philadelphia Terry Ruth Terry and Phoebe Ann Terry the remaining half I give and devise until my said wife Luce Terry for and during the term of her natural life
Afterwards I will and direct that the same be equally divided between each of my aforesaid sons and daughters share and share alike and I do make constitute and appoint my son Thomas Terry executor of this my last Will and testament Also I make constitute and appoint my brother Joseph Terry of Clapton in the county of Surrey Executor In Trust of this my Will and I do hereby utterly revoke disallow and make void or former and other Wills by me heretofore at any time left or made ratifying and confirming this only to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand

And affixed my seal this twenty eighth day of June in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and six – WT (SS) – signed sealed, published and declared by the within named William Terry the testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who at his request and in his presence and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses hereunto – Charles Lewry – Jas. Esmond his mark.
This will was proved at London on the twenty ninth day of October in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and eight before the worshipful Samuel Poaite Parson Sorter of Laws and Surrogate of the Right Honourable Sir William Wynne Knight, also Sorter of Laws Master Keeper of Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of Joseph Terry brother of the deceased and one of the Executors named in the said Will whom administration was granted of all and singular the good chattels and Credits of the said deceased he having been first sworn duly to administer power reserved of making the like Grant to Thomas Terry the son of the deceased and the other Executor named in the said Will when he shall apply for the same.”
