Sandbox for William Ferrell (abt.1744-1778) and his Descendants

Active Researchers: Patrick Stacy | Eric Weddington | Sandy (Craig) Patak | Donna Lancaster | John D Powers

Needed: Research | Add Sources | Detach Incorrect Profiles | Merge Profiles.

Note: Please Consider Linking Back to Ferrell-58 with explanation why a profile was detached. We don't want to ever deal with this mess again. 😉

As of 6/22/2023 this effort is paused. Unfortunately some of the cleanup has been undone by persons who do not agree and new erroneous profiles have been added. This will need to be reevaluated at the time when this resumes.

New Research

  • William Ferrell (abt.1744-1778)
    • See Children sub-section below for sourced children.
    • All other children that are currently attached likely belong to some other parent and should be removed. However, some of these children might need to be merged. A list of these "non-children" are tracked below.
    • Note that his middle name is not known; it is likely NOT "Richard".
    • The Find A Grave memorial that is attached to this profile may, or may not, be the same person. No primary records. It may be the source for the death date. It may be wrong. The SAR source only gives an "after" death date.
    • Look at his wife's profile, Martha (Thompson) Evans (abt. 1751 - bef. 1830), for clues on sources for William.
      • There is an unsubstantiated list of supposed children of Martha and William on her profile.

Descendant Research

Children

Look at his wife's profile, Martha (Thompson) Evans (abt. 1751 - bef. 1830), for clues on sources for William.

  • There is an unsubstantiated list of supposed children of Martha and William on her profile.

Confirmed children:

Confirmed with correlation from these sources:

Non-Children

All of these profiles are currently listed as children of William Ferrell, but we have no current source to support the claim. All profiles need overhaul.

I would also recommend detaching from parents (William Ferrell & Martha (Thompson) Ferrell) until sources are found to support the connection - Eric Weddington

Do we want to be Good WT Citizens & Source & Merge first? Anyone want to volunteer? - Sandy

Doug Leeper just reviewed all the WT'ers listed as a DNA match on the profile: None of the GEDMatch kits there even match each other.

  • Interesting, both my father (Stacy-2347) and I are both listed as DNA matches on the profile, although Dad doesn't have his Ancestry info and I just realized my GED Match info wasn't posted. I can check Ancestry to see if any of the other Ancestry are matches. - Update, none of the listed Ancestry match either. Patrick Stacy.

Is there a particular reason Ferrell-128 is not included in the list above with the other children?
posted by Donna Lancaster
Yes, Ferrell-128 is Richard Ferrell, the son of William. He is confirmed to be his son with sources and he is listed in "Children". John Ferrell is also now confirmed too. There is a section called "Non-Children", which are profiles that are connected as children but are unconfirmed. Some are likely not his children. But all profiles in that section need a lot of research.

I'm probably making this harder than it should be, but I have been researching each dependent (also their spouses and children) while cleaning and detaching if confirmed not a child. If it's not clear if the dependent is or isn't a child of this specific William Ferrell, do we detach based on the SAR record as the guiding source? I'm not used to working with SAR data (even though I live in the same town as their headquarters), but if it is like DAR, they may only have record of a dependent if one of the descendents made application.

Pesonally, I would detach but leave a note on the detached child's profile under =Research Notes= that the profile was detached (add the link to William) as it has been determined that he is not the father. Something like that. :)

I am assuming that there is another William Ferrell out there willing to be the parent at some point. If we ever find him, it would be nice so we can make a notation on your W.F.

What does everyone else think??

There definitely is another William Ferrell in the area and some of the dependents may be his children (example Ferrell-1824 may have a father named William based up son's name). What I am finding (no surprise, this is my family and we've found all sorts of DNA "surprises") is that there are several who appear to be out of wedlock children (Ferrell-108's family is one example), which makes it gray if not officially documented.

Another situation is like Ferrell-124 where I have yet to find evidence this person existed (the person I found with the name was born about 100 years later in different state).

Sidenote: I added you to the Appalachia Project Membership. There is a thread on our Discord discussing this family line.

Hi Patrick,

See the work that I've done on the profiles and notes that I have here. We have correlation between sources that show William has two sons that we know of now: Richard and John.

Sorry, I didn’t read all the comments. I proposed a merge for the two wives. She is a mess too on every site I looked at.
posted by Donna Lancaster
Can you remove that merge request? You might have already. :)

There is an unmatch merge that Patrick needs to work through.

posted by Sandy (Craig) Patak
Four PMs and Two additional on Trusted List.

We can not ask anyone to remove themselves.

Patrick should ask to be on TL and promoted to PM.

posted by Sandy (Craig) Patak
I already sent in a request. We'll see what happens.
posted by Eric Weddington
I sent a request to be added to the TL, noted that I am descended from Ferrell-1440 via both his son Ferrell-1440 and daughter Ferrell-2988, as well as from William Ferrell's wife Ferrell-2988 through her daughter Evans-2407.

Thank you for detaching that migraine inducing background image!!

Marriage record for Martha Thompson Ferrell Evans to her second husband is linked as source on Thompson-62285. Direct link to record on FS: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRWS-PH1

Additional tasks:

  • Richard Ferrell:
    • There were 2 brothers, Richard and John (John is Ferrell-1440, Richard still needs research) whose father Richard was killed 1780 at Thompson's Creek. The father appears to be a contemporary of William Ferrell, but not the same person.
    • William Ferrell had a son named Richard. Need to identify which persons are children of Richard versus the prior mentioned Richard father and son
posted by Patrick Stacy
I have the Richard, son of William, already identified. See above.

Also, you can just edit this Free Space Profile directly, instead of doing comments. That way we can collaborate.

Patrick - I nominate you to work on the Wife. :)

NP, she's my 5x grandmother. Since her daughter (my 4x grandmother) married into the Hatfield family, luckily there's been a fair bit of research on her to reference.
