About the Project

The Williamson Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Williamson name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Williamson name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Williamsons), by time period (18th Century Williamsons), or by topic (Williamson DNA, Williamson Occupations, Williamson Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

My gg-grandfather William WILLIAMSON born c1818 in Scotland, possibly Pollokshaws, Renfrewshire near Glasgow, died 27 Nov 1863 in Milton of Campsie, Stirlingshire (also near Glasgow) has been a pain to research. I now believe I've found his birth family and would love to find others who might confirm this, via atDNA or regular research. He was the final life-partner of my gg-grandma Cecilia BEATON or BEATTIE born 1820 Milton of Campsie, had 10 children by various men, died in Clydebank near Glasgow on 16 Jan 1902. With William WILLIAMSON, she had my g-granny Cecilia WILLIAMSON (1858-1919) and dau Mary WILLIAMSON (1861-1935) married James FORREST & migrated to Lynn MA). William & Cecilia may have had a son William WILLIAMSON jnr (c1864-1903) and it's looking increasingly likely they had a son they didn't keep, named by his 'adoptive' parents George CAMERON bn c1856-7 in Glasgow, ran away by sea to the US and made his life in Mississippi. I have droves of US 3rd cousins descended from George CAMERON but their atDNA has so far shown no link to any Camerons. Instead they have links to WILLIAMSONs and other lines descended from Cecilia BEATON/BEATTIE. I now believe William was born to George WILLIAMSON & Janet CRAIG of Blantyre, Lanarkshire with sibs Samuel, George jnr (both born in Blantyre), James and John (probably born like William in Pollokshaws, Renfrewshire). James (c1821-1888) made his life in New York & Holyoke, Mass, with partner Caroline BOYLE. John (c1828-1871) made his in Glasgow with two wives, Margaret KERR and Margaret WARD. I can supply a descendancy pdf, and because I live in Stirling, Scotland can do research here too.
I'm looking for information on my 2nd great grandfather, James William Williamson. He may have been born in North Carolina around 1798 or may have been born in Scotland.

James known as "Jim" was married to Nancy Combs, born in Martin County, North Carolina around 1798. Her parents are believed to have been born in Ireland. They had a daughter named Augusta. She was born in South Carolina (Aiken Barnwell area) and died in Augusta Georgia. She lived to be about 100 years old. The local newspaper ran an article claiming she was the oldest person in the country at the time of her death.
