Winthrop University

Winthrop is a public university located in Rock Hill, South Carolina. In the fall of 2021, there were 3,973 undergraduates enrolled and 1,201 graduate students enrolled. The school employed 276 full time faculty, 218 part time faculty, and 51 graduate assistants. [1]

Brief History

Timeline

1886 - Winthrop Training School was founded in Columbia, South Carolina by the school's first president David Bancroft Johnson with funding from Robert Charles Winthrop and the Peabody Fund. [2][3][4]

1891 - Changed its name to South Carolina Industrial and Winthrop Normal College. [4]

1895 - Moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina. [4][2]

1893 - Changed its name to Winthrop Normal and Industrial College of South Carolina. [4][2]

1920 - Changed its name to Winthrop College (The South Carolina College for Women). [4][2]

1929 - James Pickney Kinard became the second president. [2][3][4]

1934 - Shelton Phelps became the third president. [2][3][4]

1942 - "The U.S. Army Air Force (known as the Army Air Corps, 41st College Training Detachment) and Civilian Pilot Training Program was based at Winthrop in "Fort Bancroft."" [2]

1944 - Henry Radcliffe Sims became the fourth president. [2][3][4]

1959 - Charles S. Davis became the fifth president. [2][3][4]

1964 - Removed restrictions to allow minorities to attend. [4][2]

1973 - Charles B. Vail became the sixth president. [2][3][4]

1974 - Changed its name to Winthrop College and became co-ed.[4][2]

1983 - Phillip Lader became with seventh president. [2][3][4]

1986 - Martha Kime Piper became the eight eighth president. [2][3][4]

1989 - Anthony DiGiorgio became the ninth president. [2][3][4]

1992 - Changed its name to Winthrop University as it is known today. [4][2]

2013 - Jamie Comstock Williamson became the tenth president. [2][3][4]

2015 - Daniel F. Mahony became the eleventh president. [2][3][4]

2022 - Edward A. Serna became the twelfth president. [2][3][4]
