About

Witts Station is an unincorporated community in Harrison Township, Union County, in the U.S. state of Indiana.[1][2] It was named for the Witt family, who were among the first European settlers of the area.[3]

Timeline

  • In 1901, people associated with Witts Station included John Deal, Mrs. Iva Rife, Mrs. Mort Griffey, Miss Nellie Phares, Isaac Witt, Grandmother Witt, Miss India Rife, John Brattain, Ben Tappan, Mrs. Elizabeth Swafford, Henry Lafuze, Clint Beck, and Will Brown.[4]
  • In 1914, John Sammons owned a business at Witts Station.[5]
  • In 1915, Clarence Druly was killed at Witts Station by a team of runaway horses pulling a heavily loaded wagon.[6]
  • In 1919, Edward Price and others formed a grain company and purchased the elevator at Witts Station from the Kitchel Elevator Company. The new company was called "Buckeye Elevator and Grain Company".[7][8] That same year, the Price Grain Company of Eaton, Ohio built a large grain elevator there.[9]
  • In 1920, The Farmers' National Grain Assocation was organized, and The Buckeye Elevator and Grain company was folded into the new association.[10]
  • In 1923, the National Grain Association initiated bankruptcy proceedings.[11]
