Goals
This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname, Woods.
The purpose of this study is to work together to find a links between family units using traditional and/or DNA research.
Together, we can ensure the Woods profiles here are properly sourced, adopted and linking other family members where appropriate to help build a more complete picture of the Woods on Wikitree.
To help this you could add this category to a profile. You can add [[Category:Woods Name Study]] or the One Name Study template (which will add the category automatically).

Woods in Ireland
I created the Woods ONS so I could work on this side project, researching the Woods surname in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, my paternal links. My father is from County Antrim but his father, uncles & aunts are from the Kilmore Parish area in County Armagh. I'm currently creating profiles for Woods families originating or living within County Armagh, researching from 1864 up to early 1900s, in line with available on line records. See the Armagh_Woods project for further. Woods from County Armagh.
I'd like to expand to other Counties within Ireland as time permits and of course if others have an interest in this project, would welcome any assistance and collaboration.

Origins
The surnames Wood and Woods may have either been an English or Scottish implant or an anglicization of the Gaelic word coill meaning wood. The name Woods have mostly been found in the Ulster counties, the Woods spelling is more common in Ireland than in England.
Scottish
- The Woods surname is derived from the Middle English word "wode," meaning "wood," which suggests that the original bearer of the name lived near a wood, or was perhaps employed as a woodcutter or forester.
Irish
- The surname Woods comes from the Irish "O Cuill," meaning hazel. Because of the similarity between "cuill" and "coill" meaning wood, the surname was often translated into Woods.
English
- Woods is a name that first reached England following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Woods family lived in Leicestershire. Further research showed the name was derived from the Old English word wode, meaning wood, and indicates that the original bearer lived near a wood.

- House of Names: Woods Crests, Coat of Arms, and Name History Note: a bunch of sites selling coats of arms use this version, but Burke's General Armory lists six different coats of arms for different Woods individuals, so your line may be associated with a different coat of arms (or none at all, if you can't demonstrate descent from one of the people who were awarded coats of arms).
- Internet Surname Dababase: Woods
- Wikipedia: Woods (surname) including a list of notable people named Woods with articles on Wikipedia that you could add under "See also:" if you happen to be working on one of those profiles.
Footnotes
- This number is derived by subtracting the number of Woods profiles which are tagged as Unsourced from the total of Woods on WikiTree, so it's not necessarily accurate, since tagging is a manual procedure.
- This number is derived by taking the 283 people with a surname of Woods listed on Wikipedia, and subtracting 17 entries where Woods is not their Last Name At Birth, 15 fictional characters, and 123 living people.
- "Sourced?" asks whether this profile has any source(s) other than Wikipedia. If you can find another source for notable Woods who does not have any other sources, please add it to that profile (then edit this page to put "Yes" in that cell).
- "Connected?" asks whether this person's profile has been connected to the main tree. If you see links at the bottom of the profile listing how many degrees that person is from the profiles of the week, then their profile is connected to the main tree. (If so, please edit this page to put "Yes" in that cell.)

I did such a search and found your Nancy Woods created in 2015, you are the profile manager, and as a side note it could do with some TLC - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Woods-5171 Also I can find no such place when I just researched the history of Virginia - Manhattan Colony, Colony of Virginia? Are you sure of the place name Graeme, perhaps you could raise your concerns at the forum (G2G)?
Kind regards Tony

Hope all is well you with and yours. In the top right corner there's a "Help" drop down menu with a variety of options, many can help with that knowledge you seek, and the forum can help on general "how does WikiTree work" type questions. The goal here is to have one very large connected tree, one profile per person and because of the EU Privacy Laws most living person profiles are not visible unless the profile manager is that living person and allows it, like you and me. So having said that creating too many living person profiles sort of defeats the purpose of a public family tree, but sometimes you need to add a profile to connect to other branches, especially younger profile managers like yourself. If there's anything I can help you with regarding how / where to research, if it's in my skill set more than happy to help. Not sure where you are, but I'm in Australia so we might be in different time zones. Kind regards Tony
