Georgia has 37 counties in Appalachia: Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Dade, Dawson, Douglas, Elbert, Fannin, Floyd, Forsyth, Franklin, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Haralson, Hart, Heard, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, Walker, White, and Whitfield,[2] which are in the Southern Appalachia Region.

Colonial Georgia: Georgia was established in 1732 by James Oglethorpe and was the last of the original Thirteen Colonies. It was know then as the Province of Georgia, and was divided into parishes from 1758-1777.[3]

  • became a state in February of 1777 with the ratification of its first constitution.[3]
  • was admitted to the Union on January 2, 1788 as the 4th state to ratify the Constitution.[3]
  • declared its secession from the Union on 19 January 1861.[3]
  • joined the Confederate States of America on 8 February 1861[4] as one of the original seven Confederate states.[3]
  • was first readmitted to the U.S. Congress on 25 July 1868.[4]
  • was expelled on March 3, 1869.[4]
  • was readmitted to Congress on 15 July 1870,[4] the last state to be restored to the Union.[3]
