World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved a vast number of the world's nations. Two opposing military alliances were formed called the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, directly involving more than 100 million people from over 30 countries.

The war began for China in 1931, when Japan invaded northeastern China. By 1938 Japan occupied much of China and had taken Nanking, capital of China, where Japanese troops killed more than 42,000 civilians.

The war began for Europe in 1939, when Germany invaded Poland.

The war began for the United States on December 7, 1941 after the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was attacked. Three days after Pearl Harbor, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States.

Adolf Hitler committed suicide on 30 April, 1945 in his Führerbunker in Berlin.

The war in Europe ended in May 1945 and in the Pacific in August 1945.

Japanese officials signed the surrender document on the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Harbor September 2, 1945.
