John Edward Spain was born in October 1878 in Lichfield, Staffordshire, his father, Rev, was 32 and his mother, Fanny, was 20. He married Elsie Mary Clark and they had one daughter together. He also had one child with Mary Monica Dixon-Stain. He died in June 1955 in Hertfordshire at the age of 76.
