Moses Christopher Fitzgerald (Elizabeth Jane (Fitzgerald) Sparkman's younger brother) and his wife, Louisa Maria (Sparkman) Fitzgerald (William Williams Sparkman's younger sister) were part of an exodus from Tennessee to Missouri, which was headed up by William Williams Sparkman. W.W. was the first Sparkman to settle in Butler County, MO. He brought his wife, Elizabeth Jane Fitzgerald; his mother, Celia, and seven children from Giles County, TN to the Cane Creek community (about 8 miles west of Poplar Bluff, MO.) in the winter of 1860-61, just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, which lasted from 1861-1865.
The Sparkmans and Fitzgeralds came together in covered wagons, crossing the Mississippi in Cairo, Illinois. W.W. left Tennessee for Missouri in an effort to save his family from the onslaught of the impending war. Tennessee had seceded from the Union, while Missouri was a border state sympathetic to the Union. Apparently, this group of Sparkmans & Fitzgeralds were Union sympathizers, however, the Missouri Sparkmans did not actively participate in the Civil War.
