Biography

Oscar Charles was born on the 13 May 1876 in the Market Town of Bridport, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) inland from the English Channel near the confluence of the River Brit and its tributary the Asker, in Dorset, England[1]. He was the son of Oscar Charles Sparks and Charlotte Munden.

Marriage

Oscar Charles (Sparks) marries Elizabeth Hannah (Hill) on the 25 December 1899 at the Parish Church of Saint James, Maxwell Road, in the District of Fulham, on the north bank of the River Thames, in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham in West London, Middlesex & London, England[2].

Married in the Church of St. James according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns, by me, Richard Hill. This Marriage was solemnized between us, Oscar Charles Sparks and Elizabeth Hannah Hill in the Presence of us, Alfred Caswell and Emily Hill[3].

By 1891, Oscar and Charlotte are living at 18 Stebondale Terrace, District of Poplar, East London, Borough of Tower Hamlets, England. They reside with their children Oscar Charles, Andrew John, Alice Annie, Herbert James, Martha Jane, John Thomas and Henry[6].

The Census of 1901 records the fact that Oscar Charles (Sparks) has married Elizabeth Hannah (Hill) and is living with her at 51 Newcastle Street, Cubitt Town, in the District of Poplar, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, London & Middlesex, England[7]. The family have moved to 57 Newcastle Street, Cubitt Town, in the District of Poplar, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, London & Middlesex, England with the Census Record of 1911. Oscar and Elizabeth live there with children Charles William and Arthur Leonard (Sparks)[8].

By 1920, Oscar has lost his wife Elizabeth Hannah (Hill) and is living with his brother, Herbert James (Sparks) and Herbert's wife, Maybell Elizabeth (Cox) along with their children. They reside at 57 Newcastle Street, in Cubitt Town, District of Poplar, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Middlesex & London, England[9]. The Register of 1939 brings with it both bad, and good, news in that Oscar has lost his brother Herbert James (Sparks) but has married his brother's widow, Maybell Elizabeth (Cox). He is living with her and her daughter Martha Lilian (Sparks) at 57 Glengarnock Avenue, Cubitt Town, District of Poplar, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Middlesex & London, England[10].

Occupation

The Census of 1891 records Oscar's occupation as being a Butcher's Assistant, however, in 1901, he is employed as a General Labourer. He continues in this trade throughout his working life.

Death

Oscar Charles (Sparks) passes away on the 26 October 1953 at Saint Andrew's Hospital, Devons Road, Bromley-by-Bow, in the City of London, District of Poplar, London & Middlesex, England. He was 77 years old at the time and the cause of death will be on his Certificate[11].
